It feels kind of like the Bruce/Nat thing in AoU Who asked for this!? Why is this happening?

I assume to kill one so the other can ‘come into their own’ through rage. Because that’s how dudebros do feels. I also assumed that was the point of Tony and Pepper getting engaged, though so it’s possible I take a jaundiced view of that. It also, if rumor is true, the sole point of Clint having a family, though lbr the point of that, gleaned from 1610 as it may be was Wheatthin thumbing his nose on the way out.

What exactly happened with Joss Whedon? I have never been super involved in Whedon productions although I do love Buffy. Am I living under a rock?

Hoo boy. 

So, a couple of weeks ago, his now ex-wife, Kai Cole, published an essay on TheWrap that detailed (very calmly and not at all screed-y, I thought) how he’d basically used her and their marriage as a sort of prop/screen to help bolster his “feminist” credentials all these years—while conducting several extramarital affairs starting with people on the set of “Buffy” onward. Which she only found out about a few years ago, and when called on it, he basically tried to justify himself with some creepy self-mythologizing gaslighting bullshit. 

The essay is a tough read if you’ve been a fan, especially a longtime one, but it’s worth a glance. She didn’t name names or get into specifics; the focus was really on the fact that his whole public persona has been build on falsehoods. It sheds a whole new light on a lot of things that never seemed problematic before, makes things that already did a whole lot worse, and overall just makes you think that his more unfettered work like that Wonder Woman script wasn’t an aberration.

His only response that I’ve seen was a statement through a spokesperson saying that Ms. Cole’s account “includes inaccuracies and misrepresentations.” But I haven’t seen any further pushback; no one seems to be trying to defend him, either. (I should note that I’m not on Twitter and haven’t really dug into this since the news broke, myself, but I feel like if any of the actors or writers tied to him were speaking out, the internet would’ve taken notice.) So there doesn’t seem to be any reason not to believe her.

The day after the essay ran, Whedonesque—the fifteen-year-old fan forum and news aggregator—announced they were shutting down. There wasn’t a detailed explanation as to why or why now, but even if the moderator(s) were thinking of calling it a day anyway, it’s difficult to see the timing as coincidental. And, again, no attempt to defend the namesake or “wait and see” or to separate the art and the community from the artist.

I’ve loved Buffy and Firefly and the original Avengers movie for years. None of those canons were necessarily foundational to who I am as a person, per se, but they did teach me a lot about being a fan. And their meaning to me doesn’t just vanish. But at the same time, it’s hard to know how to feel about a body of work knowing that aspects of these things were coming from such a twisted place—and that the creator was taking advantage of a gendered power dynamic to further his own self-aggrandizement. 

It’s a weird feeling. None of this actually affects me personally, and certainly not in any tangible or substantive ways. And yet, I do feel betrayed, you know?

Anyway, that’s what’s up.

not to harp on abt a movie that never got made written by a man i find noxious but the question of “do you think they’d feel like heroes” rly struck me because at his least worst, joss whedon did write characters that make girls feel like heroes. he did. i know he’s capable of it. which is why it’s all the more crushing when he does exploitative, traumatizing shit to his female leads. & idk if he understands the importance of the question “do you think they’d feel like heroes” or if he does and doesn’t care or….what. i suspect he never really thought about it.

a tangential story: about five years ago i had a camper who LOVED wonder woman. she was about 9, & would only respond to the name “wonder woman”. she would spend her lunch talking with me about the superheroes she loved and they were all women and wonder woman was her favorite. and thank GOD she never had to see joss whedon’s wonder woman movie. she deserved better than that.
