Chrissy was still looking around the auditorium and at all of Mrs. Wheeler’s hard work. The woman had gone above and beyond to make this a magical experience for the students and it really showed. Sometimes, and she would never say this out loud for fear of the guilt strangling her, she felt a little envious of Nancy and Mike because their mom was genuinely invested and supportive of them. She found herself wishing that her own mom was like this instead of being invested in... well, best not to dwell on those dark thoughts, not while Karen was being so lovely.
When Karen slipped her arm around her waist and pulled her over to where the snacks would be laid out Chrissy felt a small pang of dread. It wasn’t that Karen was making her uncomfortable but she could already hear her own mother in her head making remarks about what would be on offer and what Chrissy was allowed to have; which would be next to none of it. “Your secret is safe with me, Mrs. Wheeler.~” The cheerleader offered a little giggle before miming zipping her lips and throwing away the key. “I think it will make those kids feel really special, like someone is thinking of them enough to bake them a little treat.”
At her request to come over and help her bake said cakes Chrissy brightened up a little. She’d never been able to cook or bake things with her mom, they didn’t really have that kind of relationship and now it was being offered to her Chrissy realised she needed it. Craved it. “I don’t want to be a bother, Mrs. Wheeler... but I think I’d really like to come over and help, if it’s really okay that I do?”
