National Tour- One Bridge Away From Haunted
Fixer-upper, Wheeling, West Virginia. Like so many other towns and cities in the region, Wheeling has suffered a severe economic downturn and resulting population decrease.

A tugboat pushes barges downriver past Wheeling, West Virginia, having just passed under its famous antebellum suspension bridge, completed in 1849 to carry the National Road over the Ohio River. To the right of the bridge is the Capitol Music Hall, still bearing the painted sign for its Jamboree USA country music performances that were broadcast live on Saturday nights over 50,000 watt powerhouse WWVA and heard throughout the northeast US and into Canada.

Crossing the 1849 Wheeling Suspension Bridge, briefly (1849-51) the world’s longest such bridge, going east from Wheeling Island into downtown Wheeling, West Virginia. The last photo looks west from the city, showing a historical marker. Shortly after these photos the historic bridge was closed indefinitely to motorized traffic in response to chronic public disregard for posted safety restrictions. Photos taken September 18, 2019.

As an addendum to the earlier posts about the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, here’s a photo from a unique angle (since drones weren’t invented yet) which is looking west toward Wheeling Island from the bridge’s east tower The photo is from March 1977 and was taken for the Historic American Engineering Record, comes from the Library of Congress.
Meanwhile the Mayor of Wheeling is trying to get the bridge reopened after its latest closure by the state; the comments on its Bridgehunter page reveal that closures and structural issues are nothing new to the historic span, with some feeling that it should be permanently closed to vehicular traffic, like the historic Washington Street Bridge in Binghamton NY.
