My current WIP is a commission that I can't share yet, but I'll cheat a little and share some of the process of a commission I've already finished. This was a commission from @wickedadaar (I'll post the full piece and the other ones once I'm finished with her upcoming commission 😏)

I start off with thumbnails using the given references as inspo. Once I decide on one, I expand it to fill the canvas.

After that, I'll start to make a more refined sketch where I block out outfits and carve out the faces. At this point, things will start to look a little different from the initial sketch phase.

For the background, my commissioner wanted a simple beach background, so I BSed it during the sketching phase. When I finished the lineart and flats, I thumbnailed the background to get a better idea of lighting (where I just took the color layer, copy and pasted it on a separate layer, then scaled it down so I didn't have to color block the thumbnails). But while playing around with it, I thought I needed to strengthen the composition. I played around with values, but I decided to add in little details like the boats into the background to frame the couple and make them the center of the piece without making it look too cluttered (or maybe I just wanted to add boats...). It made me think of this piece more like a scene where the two are having a sweet moment during a boat festival in Rivain ^^.

I took some creative freedom with it and pulled references from classical paintings for color inspiration. Once I settled on a palette, I just started painting! My background process varies; sometimes I have lineart, sometimes I just dive into painting. Depends on the scale and the kind of intricacies I'm dealing with. Since these additions are not the focus, I kept them simple. (Had to dig deep into my memory of Sea of Thieves to draw these boats 😂)

This wouldn't be a messy middle if I didn't show the more unattractive parts of the piece. Sometimes I get lazy, and I don't want to paint the parts behind the characters. I save a little time that way. Also, I really don't know what was going on with the tiles in the sand there. It's hidden behind the characters, so I guess I couldn't be bothered to erase it 😂.
