Messy Middles~

My current WIP is a commission that I can't share yet, but I'll cheat a little and share some of the process of a commission I've already finished. This was a commission from @wickedadaar (I'll post the full piece and the other ones once I'm finished with her upcoming commission 😏)

I start off with thumbnails using the given references as inspo. Once I decide on one, I expand it to fill the canvas.

After that, I'll start to make a more refined sketch where I block out outfits and carve out the faces. At this point, things will start to look a little different from the initial sketch phase.

For the background, my commissioner wanted a simple beach background, so I BSed it during the sketching phase. When I finished the lineart and flats, I thumbnailed the background to get a better idea of lighting (where I just took the color layer, copy and pasted it on a separate layer, then scaled it down so I didn't have to color block the thumbnails). But while playing around with it, I thought I needed to strengthen the composition. I played around with values, but I decided to add in little details like the boats into the background to frame the couple and make them the center of the piece without making it look too cluttered (or maybe I just wanted to add boats...). It made me think of this piece more like a scene where the two are having a sweet moment during a boat festival in Rivain ^^.

I took some creative freedom with it and pulled references from classical paintings for color inspiration. Once I settled on a palette, I just started painting! My background process varies; sometimes I have lineart, sometimes I just dive into painting. Depends on the scale and the kind of intricacies I'm dealing with. Since these additions are not the focus, I kept them simple. (Had to dig deep into my memory of Sea of Thieves to draw these boats 😂)

This wouldn't be a messy middle if I didn't show the more unattractive parts of the piece. Sometimes I get lazy, and I don't want to paint the parts behind the characters. I save a little time that way. Also, I really don't know what was going on with the tiles in the sand there. It's hidden behind the characters, so I guess I couldn't be bothered to erase it 😂.

RR Secret Santanalia!

I was super excited to participate and I received the wonderful @larknnightingale and their Rook, Zephyr!

Zephyr's wish was just some sleep, so here is some nice sleepy snuggles for them with Lucanis.

I haven't done a lot of digital art this year, so this was a nice treat to end the year off. I hope yo enjoy it and I had a great time learning about Zephyr and getting to look at all your good art of them!!

On this Santanlia, Zephyr gifted Dathrash a pleasantly robust spiced tea sweetened with small chunks of dried pears. There is no better way to enjoy such a lovely blend than pouring a cup for him and his fellow plant buddy.

Coming off of hiatus with a brand new AU in hand!

Dear GOD Ladies, Gents, and Non-Binary Friends…..this one is a DOOZY

It has consumed my soul like fire and I don’t ever wanna snuff it out!!

But enough about me gushing about this au….lets get into the details shall we!? >:3c

It’s hard to tell from these set of photos, but! The dear AU that I have been obsessing over is a Greaser!AU created by my dear friend @caracalfeather, all of us who got involved took a ton of inspiration from “The Outsiders” and (ofc) “Grease”

I don’t want to explain the general plot to you guys (in case someone else has already) but I’ll just tell you all what my dearest darling girl Lyra has to do with it!!

Lyra Slaquer is a foreign exchange student from France who lives with @larknnightingale’s Samaria. She has one year and one year only in the US, a year that she was expecting to be just a normal school year. The usual run down of classes, homework, sleep repeat.

But what she got, and what she didn’t expect, was that she would live that year with the most adventure and excitement she ever had in her entire life. 

Lyra of course befriends Samaria, @puzzle-piece-angel‘s Maura (Who has caught the eye of pretty much every single greaser in the school. Lyra and Samaria can be found behind a wall giving their friend a thumbs up supporting her in her adventures of dealing with flirtatious grease monkeys) 

She started a Swing Club, once a week she brings her portable record player to any Diner that would host the group, and she will basically DJ the entire dance. Taking requests and sometimes swaying to the tune of the music. (Funny thing is, is that she keeps this a secret from her friends) 

Lyra also started working in the town’s local Library, hoping to find a new career path for herself.   

There is so much more to this AU that has been made, but because this post is already getting so long I’ll just leave you with the basics!!! I am so happy to be back to posting!!

Here we have a very tipsy Kit giving some sweet smooches to a very flustered Maura, who really just wants to help the poor guy find a bed to sleep it off xD

He did originally have a very nice silk shirt when he started out the night, but he gave it to the pretty lady behind the bar (along with his very fancy bracelets) to pay off his tab since someone cut his purse. She accepted it graciously when he mentioned how much better it would look on someone as stunning as her lol

Kit doesn’t usually get drunk on purpose cx He just loves honey mead and sometimes one just ends up becoming three and before he realizes it, he’s dancing on the tables! Maura sees this and, being the absolute gem that she is, looks at this very pretty, smol, half-dressed drunk boi all alone in a shady setting and decides she should probably step in before things turn south for him.

Too late does she realize Kit is a shameless flirt with a tendancy for mischief who’s a little confused on the right way to repay someone’s kindness xD

Friends have convinced me into a Greaser!AU and because I am forever obssessed with the Outsiders, I threw myself at it head first x’DD I regret nothing.

Kit would be from the nearest reservation, a wild child - absolute free spirit. He’d have a big black Harley, beautifully maintained (don’t ask him how he got it) and an old dusty blue mustang that was passed down from his years dead older brother - it would only be taken out into town when he really needs the space tbh.

He’s a complete charmer, loves to flirt like nobody’s buisness. Enjoys a good laugh, loves any kind of adventure. He’s also prone to getting into fights. He’s never really fit into any groups or gangs, a bit of a pariah even around his own people for the way he thinks and acts. But, as good as he is at getting himself into trouble, he’s also got a knack for getting out of it and so - by some mericle - he’s still alive and kicking for yet another day lol

Will that trend continue? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Who knows!!

I’ve written about Dante practicing alchemy, but as a visual person, I also really wanted to see him doing so other than in my head… so I commissioned @larknnightingale to bring him to life. Now, when I tell you that I screamed a little when I saw the completed piece, I’m not exaggerating 😅 His focus and attention to his craft is palpable in this and oh, my God, the lighting is absolutely spectacular! Thank you so, so much! I am undoubtedly going to be plastering my boy everywhere I can 😆💚
