It's funny that you brought up Xena/Gabrielle bc while watching Hacks I kept thinking that that was the greatest love story in television since the two of them sjskdk
LITERALLY!!! You get it!! I've been thinking about this a lot because there are obviously differences between the two ships/shows, but a huge part of the overlap between the two (and part of what makes both of them the greatest love stories!) is that both shows are about two women who are fundamentally important to each other, to the virtual exclusion of anyone and anything else. And like. That never happens. I'm always drawn to pairings where they're deeply important to one another, but in the best cases those relationships are a fraction of the story and they're just two of many characters.
But like Xena, almost every single episode of Hacks is just about the two of them! That kind of attention allows for so much time to dig into their relationship, which is imo a huge part of why it's so romantic. The audience is allowed to see how and why they're important to each other, and like Xena it's so deeply satisfying that the show values their relationship as much as the audience!!
