Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a 2020 presidential candidate, unveiled a plan on black maternity care in a new op-ed for Essence magazine .
For this next primary election, there are a lot of people running for the Democratic candidate, and because of this, the politicians have to stand out from each other. In this interview with Essence magazine, Senator Elizabeth Warren states that if she is elected president, then she will reward hospitals for having low maternal mortality rates amongst black women. This has been a very big problem in America and was first attributed to poverty and limited access to medical care, but with the improvement in these areas, the rates are still high. I found it interesting that Senator Warren would talk about this for the first time in a Black women’s magazine, but as a senator, could have worked on the legislation before running. The problems of the black community are usually looked over or not addressed, treating them like they don’t exist, until elections and the reoccurring problems exist.
