Where to sleep??

Last night we camped between 2 corn fields along the power lines. The further from the West we get the open public land becomes less, and so does our camping spots! Anyone road tripped around the Great Lakes and have suggestions on where we can sleep? We like to avoid RV parks and campgrounds, but thinking we may need to resort to them now that we are getting further East.

Sometimes we are lucky and find a parking spot like this one. And then there was our night in Santa Barbara. The sun just set as the van is groaning getting the last meters up the steep hill. We did not exactly find an abundance of sleeping options in this little town, so we were happy to park in front of the cemetery for the night. Should be quiet. As I was ready to throw the pasta into the boiling water, there is a corpse transport driving up, lifting a heavy body out of the car and offering us a first row view onto the silhouette that is covered by some light foil.
