silk 2023 really went in the opposite direction of common interpretation/characterization with Saya and still had it be in character. Like she's not not in character, she just got worse instead of better, and I respect that.

Can not believe Silk was only introduced in 2014 by the way, thought she's been around way longer than that for some reason. Do you want to see her in any other major pieces of media like the MCU or BTSV?
ah yes, she's a pretty new character. I totally understand why you would think she'd be older though! Personally, I would love to see her in live action and btsv but particularly not the mcu? There's definitely a way for it to be done really well! I don't know if I trust them to, but the appeal of seeing Silk on the big screen is really high -- not gonna lie -- so I will probably be more forgiving if the mcu does decide to adapt her and fumble the bag. But with the whole Sony stuff, they might never be able to -- oooh a Sony adaptation could be cool! I really liked Venom!
BTSV I'm 100% gunning for. I was praying she would be in the ATSV trailer and I still have hope she'll be in the next one. I really want to see what sort of art style they'll choose for her along with her movements! There's so many cool things that separate her from the others (and the one, bunker-sized thing) and she played such a big role in the original spiderverse comic event that it feels unfair if she doesn't make an appearance at all. I have a small theory that since the third movie is going to be about disproving Miguel, we'll get the intro cards ("My name is Cindy Moon, and for the last however-long-it's-been, I've been the one and only... SILK") to spider-characters that have nothing to do with the original Peter Parker origin story.
Otherwise, I still have a candle lit for the Silk Amazon TV show that is rotting in developmental hell right now. I think Silk is a character that would do well in a live action and I would love to see it executed well, along with a different interpretation of her character. There's so many ways they could take her character and great runs to fall back on, from the original iconic 2015-2016 run with all the tension with Black Cat to the recent 2021 and 2022 runs that are more conducive to shorter seasons but still serve as a good jumping off point. I could go on about the different ways they could represent Cindy's Korean-American identity, but thats not the point of the ask.
More than her appearing on screen is that I wish she would have more runs! Marvel is treating her like a reserve character right now and only giving the big names ongoings (only bringing her out every AAPI month and maybe a mini), which is affecting her negatively in sales, popularity, etc. I think that working on her library of iconic runs will be more beneficial overall, because when she is adapted to the screen, the writers there will have more to go off of! I think the fact that we're getting yearly minis is good, since it means that Marvel hasn't forgotten about her, but I wish they would take the plunge to give her a loooong ongoing because it WILL pay off in the end. She'd be so much more popular if they did!
Thanks for the ask, I love answering them! This ended up being a lot longer than I expected it to be, but most things do. I hope you had an enjoyable day, anon, and/or continue to!
aggggghhh I wish silk witch arc hadn't gotten rid of Lola and Rafferty moving to the suburbs :(( I love that for them, but it's two less of the great supporting cast Cindy has had since her solos started. come back lesbians...
Hey! I saw your infographic about where to start reading Silk. I was wondering why not TASM 2014 comics?
Hello, anon! I'm so glad you saw my infographic, I did leave it vague in the image so I understand why someone would be curious!
Oooh boy, buckle up because Dan Slott (the creator of Silk) apologized himself for needlessly sexualizing her, if that gives you an idea of how bad it was. I screenshotted the original tweets because Twitter isn't in a user-friendly state right now below.
Essentially, Silk was introduced to be bitten by the same spider as Peter Parker, which is all fine and good until we get to the part where it meant they were so attracted to each other's 'pheromones' that they... couldn't keep their hands off each other. Yeah. Literally someone in the comic described them as "dogs in heat" and "urge to mate" was another descriptor used by Peter himself.
(TASM 2014 issues #7 and #9)
Genuinely I don't know how to explain just how much how weird that is. It's just bad writing -- obviously a cop out to have a new love interest for Peter, but not wanting to put in any work to make it work past "they were bitten by the same spider so they're meant to be." It was poorly received by fans back then; it's poorly received now. I honestly didn't think we'd get an apology for it, but I guess seven years late is better than never.
To touch upon the harmful Asian stereotypes, East Asian women have been fetishized and sexualized so much under the Western gaze that having a Korean-American woman being compelled to fuck the white male main character is... not helping things, to say the least. There's a moment where she's weirdly possessive over Peter, and it's just hard to read. Also, her original suit was bad. Like really really bad. I don't know why people still draw her in it.
(TASM 2014 #5 and #10)
I hope this explains why people tend to ignore her intro and why I recommend starting with her solos! Her first solo run sets a really good foundational base for her character and loses that whole pheromones thing entirely. It gives you a great impression of Silk while TASM will just leave you frustrated and you really don't need much prior context going head-on into it. I think that without the fatal-attraction part pre-solo the other things that happen are fun, but I wouldn't wish the bad stuff on anyone, if that makes sense. Thanks for the ask!
As soon as I heard a certain someone appeared in the recent game, I came straight to your blog lol. We were just talking about how you would want to see this character in BYTSV. How do you feel about her appearing in the new game? I have finished it, but I really am loving the story telling and the different things they've taken from the comics and putting their own spin on it, like any adaptation, I think they'll treat the character well So, your thoughts? Things you want to see?
Hellloooooo!! I appreciate that I'm your go-to🙏🙏 and I'm excited for the introduction! I've only heard good things about the ps4 game, though I haven't played it, so I'm looking forward to it. The iterative nature of comics and adaptations is always fun to explore so I'm curious how they'll treat Silk in this universe, especially since this is an avenue for how many people are gonna discover her.
When I first heard that Rio and Albert Sr. were dating I thought it was weird choice but I'm definitely intrigued on where that'll go. Where's Nari, where's Albert Jr.? I guess we'll see lol
An interesting thing that was brought up was the bunker. There are things to characters that STICK despite all the reboots and adaptations so I'm wondering if the bunker is one of them? Like, no shot, the bunker-for-ten-years was a weird choice made for continuity reasons but what has been built from that has made her very compelling. I think her story can be done without a bunker 100% and it would be so interesting to see her story catalyzed in a way without it. I think, personally, I would like to see the bunker in there but only because to me seeing what you can make of established lore and working within limitations is a lot more fun than reworking the entire story. But regardless of which direction they go, as long as they have the heart of the story, I'm gonna enjoy it :) part of me wants to see what they'll do without the bunker too!
Things I would like to see! I can't wait for the Miles and Cindy interactions and watching her fight! I hope they bring in the web claws and more hand-to-hand combat. Hints to her family dynamic would be so good too/mentions of her relationship with her brother, father, mother. Also this is purely self-indulgent but a Luna Snow cameo would be so much fun!
Saya Ishii or Black Cat 🤔
nonny can I say both?!! I mean, I only say Black Cat because of the dramaaaa. If Saya had even half of the history Cindy and Felicia had, it would be a tough call, I think. Saya is the first original antagonist (past Dragonclaw love him ofc) of Cindy's own rogue gallery and everything Cindy is not! That means something! She's hyper-online, an influencer and tech-y, everything Cindy has had to adjust to since the bunker. She was only here for a mini run, but she was literally so iconic for all of it. That purple pantsuit!! The scarf: we'll always have the cave! The fact that Saya can be considered a top love interest of Cindy's despite the 2021 run being 5 issues, along with going against her brother Max, is a testament to how Goo wrote her! I would love to have her back again. However, Felicia is formative in Cindy's journey out of the bunker and as a hero, and is also part of her best run (2015-2016 BELOVED). In terms of history, Saya is a shark to Felicia's whale,, hsdfjdsfj sorry! The point is that we got to see silkcat develop for longer than the amount of time Saya got, which leads to my bias.
I think tackling either is really interesting. Felicia could stay as the cornerstone of Cindy's transitional period, a right person wrong time situation where both leave so changed they could never be together again. Or they could reunite and make amends, leading to whatever comes after. Saya could always come back, maybe with a new plan or corroborating with Cindy as they did in the end. If Saya had more time I think it would be an even tougher call, but Black Cat has had an impact on Cindy's story that's hard to ignore or outdo in my opinion.
Who are some of your favorite superheroes in comics?
Admittedly, my pool is relatively small and I stick with a very specific niche of modern era comics. I haven't had the time to delve deeper into other characters and comics as a whole like I've been meaning to😔 Regardless, my favorites are mainly in the New Agents of Atlas! Of course my fave Silk is there -- I'm a Cindy Moon blog what were we expecting -- but we also got great characters like Sword Master(now Iron Fist), Wave, Aero, etc. Literally I think about White Fox like 24/7 and I have some meta of her recent appearance I really should polish and post. Fun fact: Luna Snow in there is the character I would choose to work on if I was ever hired by Marvel :))
All those characters I read while reading all of Silk's appearances, ended up falling for them and read their (too few) appearances as well. Of the mainstream heroes, I've loved Spider-Man since the Raimi movies (I grew up on them so I'm attached). Indie-wise, please check out The Uniques! You can read them on Webtoon here; I have their first three physical volumes and they're very fun!
