Can you ask others in the industry?
For pricing? I talk to all sorts of people who raise pigs on facebook, but they are all over. The only ones around here I really talk to are the farmers that raise confinement and getting a straight answer on how they make a profit is like pulling water from a rock. Hell the one pig farmer won’t even tell me how many pigs he has. His answer is always just “A lot.”
I mean I could raise my prices, there are others in the area at least a dollar or more over my retail prices, but then I would no longer be affordable to the majority of my customer base. I got into farming not to get rich, but to provide locals with local food. Yeah I want the rich foodies to buy my product, but I want the retirees and people on food stamps to buy from me as well. I’m not giving my pork away, but I’m also not raising my prices just because I know the food snobs will still pay for it no matter what the price. It’s why we do our best to keep our costs as low as possible, so we can keep our prices down.
I want to raise quality meat, at an affordable price, that is accessible to more than just the 1%.
