The apartment is silent when Bucky slips through the front door. It's a little after two in the morning and it's so quiet it seems as if the world is sleeping, even if this is New York and it's guaranteed that isn't the case.
Bucky wipes his cut lip with the back of his hand, the flesh one because blood is a bitch to clean out of the metal segments of his left hand, flinching when it stings. Fury had been right, as he usually was, about the presence of several HYDRA agents hiding in a small town somewhere in Vermont - Bucky hadn't even gotten the name of the place, just dropped in from the helicopter and wiped them out. Not without a fight though, evidenced by several small injuries littering his face and flesh arm, and one nasty cut on his hip.
Steve's sound asleep in their bed, snuggled up to Bucky's pillow and snoring loudly, so he tries to be as quiet as possible when he goes into the bathroom to clean up. Of course luck is against him as always because the moment he turns on the light Steve is next to him, his brows drawn together in concern.
"Why do they always go for your face?" He asks, tracing a fingertip under the gash at Bucky's hairline, his frown deepening even further. "I really wish you'd stop taking these solo missions, Buck."
Steve sighs that "Captain America is disappointed in you" kind of sigh and Bucky is suddenly very, very angry.
He spins on Steve, pushing his hand away from his face. "Oh you do, huh? Well I really, really wish I'd just been able to die when I fell from that train Steve, like I was fucking supposed to! I really wish I hadn't been turned into a machine! I wish that I could have backup on missions but I'm too scared that I'm not going to be able to tell the difference between enemy and ally!" Bucky is breathing hard and he realizes he's got Steve pushed up against the wall and that's all it takes to calm him down. He pushes away from Steve, who's eyes have gone all sad the way they do when Bucky gets like this.
Steve takes a step forward, reaching a placating hand forward to rest on Bucky's uninjured hip. "Buck, that won't happen. You haven't had an episode in months. And even the ones you were having weren't dangerous, you just shut down. Quit beating yourself up, because the bad guys have got that job taken care of." He pokes a fading bruise on Bucky's side to illustrate his point.
"I'm only human Steve, what do you expect?" Bucky sits on the edge of the tub, the one that was a selling point for this place because it can fit both of them.
"What I expect is for you to let me clean you up, and then call Fury and request a couple of days leave." Steve says, smirking when Bucky raises an eyebrow at him and reaching behind him to turn on the faucet. "And also for you to get naked, like right now."
Bucky laughs despite himself and presses a kiss to Steve's chin.
He's only human, he's an ass to his boyfriend and he messes up sometimes, but Steve is always there to make him feel better with that sunshine smile of his.
