𝐈𝐓 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐎𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐒𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐘𝐒, that Sophie and Benedict found themselves staying at the Bridgerton House overnight. Although they visited their family fairly often, when the couple did they often stayed at the (much better kept these days) apartment that Benedict had once used as bachelor lodgings. However, a family dinner had ran late (as it often did when a family genuinely enjoys one another's company, she was happy to learn), and a storm had become quite intense. Thus, they'd been urged to stay the night. It was still odd, Sophie realised, to be sleeping in the Bridgerton house as a member of the family after so long in her maid's quarters downstairs. Perhaps, she reasoned, it was why her night remained fitful. It could not have been the storm, for she had never been much bothered by thunder or winds. In fact, she was one of the rare few who found rain as a comfort. Nor could it be the company, as Sophie had never felt more secure or at home than next to her husband. It had to be the room itself, nothing else made sense. She had long felt as a proper member of the family, and Our Cottage had truly felt as it's name implied: theirs. It was just a surreal experience with a strange sense of memory entwined.
It was this very restlessness that made Sophie hear a sound which brought her to alert. The house, despite the storm, had been rather silent. As a member of house staff for years, Sophie had learned the difference between the sounds of a house, the sounds of it's staff, and the sound of someone else creeping through it's halls. Pulling her silken dressing gown over herself and stepping into her slippers, Sophie rose to her feet as she approached the bedroom door to take a glance down the hallway. It was only her surprise, to find Eloise, in what she could only assume was an attempt to walk silently past their door. " Psst. " she called out in a whispered tone, " Eloise ? Whatever are you doing this late ? " Sophie stepped into the hallway, closing the door softly behind her as she surveyed her sister-in-law. " Are you alright ? Is something the matter ?
