FAIRYTALES.
‘ let me guess, you thought a true love’s kiss would help you. ’
‘ you will always follow the trail in the wood, and it will guide you on the same path, to the same cottage, the same witch. it will always be your undoing. ’
‘ i have never seen a more tragic creature. how might i help you ? ’
‘ you must take this knife and plunge it into his / her / their heart. ’
‘ forget yourself. that is how you break your curse. ’
‘ remove this thorn from my hand, and you will be rewarded. ’
‘ i’m tired of being a prince. i think i would actually enjoy being a frog. ’
‘ tell me of the beast, and i will hunt it for you. ’
‘ mice are never just mice, and pumpkins are rarely just pumpkins. ’
‘ i don’t think breaking a spell should be this simple. ’
‘ i never thought i’d return here, to the site where it all began. ’
‘ are you an orphan ? it’s just that they’re always finding themselves in magical predicaments. ’
‘ the mirror speaks falsely in your ear. it is your true curse. ’
‘ my heart feels uneasy, although i am free. is it supposed to ? ’
‘ i’m sorry, it’s just that i thought this is the part of the quest where the animals ought to start talking to me. ’
‘ of course i plan on going to the ball. why wouldn’t i ? ’
‘ jealousy has made more witches out of women than adam’s rib. ’
‘ where has choosing goodheartedness and having golden hair ever gotten you ? ’
‘ are you a helpful wizard, or the kind that sits in a tower reading moldy books ? ’
‘ i’m dreadfully bored. who knew waiting for a prince was so strenuous ? ’
‘ we all have towers we must leave, and magic that will try to thwart us. ’
‘ i’m afraid for the clock to strike. the hour will ring in the place of my heartbeat when we must be parted. ’
‘ i had no idea carpets could fly. or pigs for that matter. ’
‘ what would happen if the knight did not arrive to the castle, and the dragon made a den of it and a hoard of its people and prize of its princess ? ’
‘ i sometimes think i was switched out at birth, like a lizard in a bird’s nest. i belong somewhere else. ’
‘ in another kingdom exists a throne and a crown that is mine by right. ’
‘ if i did not wake up one day, i would still be waiting on a spinning wheel, dutifully bored. ’
‘ something in me knows you are here for my heart. ’
FOLKLORE.
‘ in all the myths i’ve heard, it’s never been worthwhile to approach strange sights. it’s best to turn around and pretend you never saw them. ’
‘ nothing is folklore until it exists longer than consciousness remembers, and lives in spite of it. ’
‘ i’ve heard your name before, in songs and lengthy ballads. ’
‘ whatever has led you here to me, there is destiny in its making. ’
‘ the beast returns every century or so, and tries to devour us. it will come again before long. ’
‘ a pretty face is not nothing. it earns you a hearth and a kind hand, after all. ’
‘ their lips are red as blood, and their teeth carve ruin into throats. ’
‘ aren’t dragons supposed to breathe fire and make a fuss about having their treasure found ? ’
‘ someday you will become a pilgrim, a saint, or a favored story, while i will be a voice on the wind. ’
‘ the stories say brides don’t live to the light before demons devour them. why should i become one ? ’
‘ there was another girl like you once, in a small town like this one. i can’t remember if she became the monster or died trying to escape it. ’
‘ remember to festoon the hearth with garlic, or rosemary, or one of those mundane herbs that keep evil out. ’
‘ that sounds like nothing but a tall tale, but i’m certain smaller minds would eat it up. ’
‘ to cross this bridge, you’ll have to pay a heavy toll. ’
‘ don’t stray too far from the path set before you, or something interesting might happen. ’
‘ i’ve passed that yard of crops a million times, but the crow never moved from its post until this morning. ’
‘ it is as though ancient fears are still in us like scars or stitches. ’
‘ graveyards aren’t where you find ghosts. look for them in places that feel like memories you shouldn’t have. ’
‘ stories reap princes from peasants as if their skins were crops in the ground. ’
‘ what form does your fear take ? surely not that of a bear or a lion. such things are too assuring. ’
‘ i found myself where everything was too familiar to be real. ’
‘ in safe beds on cold dark nights, we learn to face the monsters in our own minds. ’
FAEKIND.
‘ you’re not to partake in a fairy feast. don’t you know it’s the food that will devour you ? ’
‘ i’m sorry you did not read the eyes of the trees before finding yourself here. ’
‘ i wish to go back. i want to forget everything. ’
‘ you think that believing in us is enough to protect you ? that it will kill us if you forget, and we prey upon your unknowing ? ’
‘ step around the ring three times, like a backwards clock. that’s how you get to fairyland. ’
‘ i’ve never heard such sweet music before. ’
‘ where the trees begin to twist and groan in their roots, remember you must not make a right turn. ’
‘ i didn’t feel like i’d stepped into another world, but like it stepped into me. i knew i was there and forgot i’d left anything behind. ’
‘ how amusing. a human ! ’
‘ would you be my bride if i were to take you into the ground ? ’
‘ i know of tunnels you might take, the burrows of trolls and rabbits. ’
‘ don’t take anything from this realm, none of it is worth the price of keeping. ’
‘ there are courts by many titles in the lands beyond the veil, all of them other. ’
‘ names are not like currency here; they are more precious than diamonds and legacies. ’
‘ did you think all of us looked like goblins ? ’
‘ getting here is easy, but getting home is quite the trick. ’
‘ i shall give you a riddle, and it will puzzle you until you know the answer but forget your own soul. ’
‘ a bloodline is nothing when you’ve outlived civilizations. ’
‘ refusing my hospitality is like human sin, and it will bring worse upon you. ’
‘ everything here is and isn’t, and things are and aren’t. ’
‘ on lonely nights i stare into the trees, and a strange face leers back. ’
‘ the thrones here are made of bones and blood, and built upon decay. ’
‘ a third time is not a charm, but a bargain. it says that you want something enough to wager your sense. ’
‘ it is dangerous to think that magical beings do not have human intensities. ’

Something that I feel goes unexamined when we think about the abuse Sophie suffered at the hands of Araminta, is how she was physically kept on property the majority of the time. We see the staff from the families of the Ton out at markets and shops, running errands and socializing with one another. However, when people are trying to find out information about Sophie / Araminta's former maid --- very, very few people have the knowledge that they are one in the same. Which suggests to me that Sophie was not a member of staff who was out in the world enough to be recognized by name or face, unless they had previously engaged with her. This also makes sense if we consider the fact that Sophie was not simply just a member of household staff, she was essentially enslaved and treated in ways of questionable legality within the world of Bridgerton. Araminta is seen in both the novel and the series to take a particularly sadistic approach to her step-daughter, even if she refuses to acknowledge her as such. Holding Sophie hostage, even if she does not fully register that's what's happening right away, as a method of control. Araminta exerts control to malicious degrees over Sophie. Even though she is not a kind employer, the lengths she takes with Sophie is not seen replicated towards other staff. It's personal and intentional. Moreover, I don't think this ostracization is something that only just began after the former Lord Penwood passed away. This isolation and removal from society was seen to start with acts such as banning Sophie from lessons with the other girls. Instilling this idea of being an 'other', and something to be ashamed of and locked away. What happens when Sophie's father dies, is not a new act - but rather an overt extension of years of subtler ones meant to both control Sophie and isolate her. The fact that Sophie is not a known member of the household, even as simply a ward of Lord Penwood by the time of his death suggests heavily that this has escalated far beyond separate lessons by this point.. and has become so normalized, that Sophie doesn't register the full cruelty offered to her by Araminta disguised as a kind gesture in the graveyard until it is far too late. It makes me think of the choices used in the animated Disney film, Cinderella, to depict the house she lives in with strategic shadows to give the visual of her being swallowed or imprisoned by the house.

𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 was to come across Benedict Bridgerton tonight. Although, she had never been more grateful for the fact that tonight's benefit was a masquerade. She did not frequent the society functions her step-family did, the public happily accepted that the daughter of the late Lord Richard Gun was believed to be shy and studious... uninterested in the family legacy and work, and only attended events with her family occasionally. It was lies, of course, but she didn't challenge the narrative Araminta crafted over years. It was only because the charity involved was one her father had been passionate about that she was here. It would be more noticed if she didn't attend than if she did.
If Benedict realised exactly who she was, it was hard to say. Did he recognize her as the oft forgotten Ji-Eun Gun, who was not frequently seen in society compared to her step-sisters? Or, and perhaps worse, did he recognize her as Sophie Baek ? The woman who he loitered around the Bridgerton offices after hours to chat and shadow as she worked as janitorial staff ? Would realization of one, lead to discovery of the other ? What did that mean regarding his statement, that Sophie would be lying to pretend she wasn't tempted by herself ? Was she just another stranger at a party ? A one off fling he was famous for ? Standing much too close than she'd normally have ever dared without the mask, she raised the champagne flute to her lips in an effort to steal a few extra seconds to consider her options. One part of her would face a nightmare if her family discovered she had even a cordial relationship with the second eldest Bridgerton. Another part of her would be risking her escape plan if she became entangled (even briefly) with someone who technically employed her. There was that oft neglected third part, however, that she heard stirring for the first time in a very long time. What of her, no sides, but just her as a whole ? What did she want ? Was she even allowed to want ? If Benedict moved to kiss her, she'd never know who it was being kissed. However, if she kissed Benedict, if she let herself have this one thing, then she could decide for him. It could just be truly her, even if he never knew. So, emptying her glass and setting it on the railing of the private balcony --- Sophie chose something for herself, as she pulled Benedict into kiss

𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐚 𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞, as she hears Daphne's question. There was a time, not too long ago, that Sophie would have absolutely been feeling all sorts of out of place discomfort. The transition from illegitimate maid to a respectable lady of the Ton had not been an easy one, and one she still caught herself struggling with sometimes, but the Bridgerton's had opened their homes and hearts to her so readily that when she was in their homes (even for lavish parties like the one the Duke and Duchess of Hastings were giving at present), Sophie had never felt more like herself. " I am, thank you. " She answered with a graceful bow. Although Daphne was now her sister-in-law, she still felt that, until she knew her better, that it was best to still provide her with all required graces befitting her. " Your home is lovely, and I am truly so delighted to partake in everything you have planned for the evening. "

Although the people of the will know Sophie as that: Sophie Maria Baek (later: Gun and Bridgerton). This is merely the English name she was given in order to better blend into society, as her parents could both remember the time in their youths where "their side" was not fully integrated into society. To her mother, their community, and even Lord Penwood in private on occasion, Sophie Baek was addressed as BAEK JI-EUN (or Ji-Eun Baek, in a english standardization). The name Sophie means "Wisdom", and certain characters/spelling in Korean that make the name component, "Ji", also share this meaning. I believe this would have been intentional, as born to Korean parents they would have understood the importance names and selecting the specific characters for them have in their culture. The second part of her given name, "Eun", can have two different meanings (again, based on the characters used in it's spelling). The first is "Kindness", which is very fitting to Sophie's character. The second, however, is prophetic in a way, as it means "Silver". Personally, I believe Sophie would end up changing the characters used in her given name, when she changes her name legally to Sophie Bridgerton, from Eun meaning Kindness, to Eun meaning Silver. As an honorific to the Lady in Silver, and the night that changed her life forever. Thus making her Sophie/Ji-Eun Bridgerton, The Wise Lady in Silver.

RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN’S CINDERELLA ━ 1997, dir. Robert Iscove
𝐚 𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐞'𝐬 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 as she listened to the enthusiasm leak from Eloise's voice as she recounted the events at the ball. In truth, much of the night had been a romantic whirlwind for her --- with much of it enjoyed in privacy on the terrace dancing with her new betrothed. Hearing the story of her own engagement from the outside perspective, it felt surreal in the sense that in that moment Sophie had hardly registered anyone else in that moment but Benedict and herself. The rest of the crowd could have simply kept on dancing with no mind to her, and it wouldn't have made a difference in that moment. " I confess, I was unaware of the spectacle we caused. I believe by that point in the night, I felt like I was walking on clouds inside my most daring daydreams. "
The romance of the night had been appreciated, but it had been so much more than that. Sophie had regained a part of herself that Araminta had stolen from her that day over her father's grave. Even if today she was simply still Sophie Baek, that would have been victory enough for her --- a sentiment she believed Eloise might appreciate. " In truth, I owe much to you and your family. I never could have confronted Araminta and been heard without all of your aid and support... this ring is truly just a cherry on top of something more monumental for me. "
