White Anerican citizen charged with attempted murder.
@whatareyoubook: "In “What Are You?” Christine Holmes introduces us to Julie Mei Mueller. Weary of the stares and the questions, Julie is sometimes embarrassed by her #Taiwanese and #WhiteAmerican cultures although she secretly loves them both. Through this timely and tender children's book that speaks directly to all #biracialAsian children, boys and girls like Julie will learn to embrace who they are and where they come from." 🇹🇼🇺🇸🏳️ #whatareyou #mixedkids #mixedgirlproblems #ff #featurefriday https://www.instagram.com/p/CbQuhhOujCN/?utm_medium=tumblr

#Mitski (born Mitsuki Laycock) is a #JapaneseAmerican singer/songwriter. NPR calls her the 21st Century’s Poet Laureate Of Young Adulthood. She self-released her first 2 albums & after graduating college, she released her 3rd, Bury Me at Makeout Creek (2014), then Puberty 2 (2016) & Be the Cowboy (2018). She was born in #Japan to a #WhiteAmerican father & a #Japanese mother. “My father works for the State Department. He’s a foreign service officer meaning we moved to a different country every year or so when I was growing up. So the question “Where are you from?” is actually quite complicated for me...Sometimes I feel very Japanese, so I say I’m from Japan. I lived in Malaysia for 3 years. Sometimes, I just randomly say different places to a person I know I’m not going to meet again. Usually, it’s just easier to say that I’m from New York, because at this point New York is the place I’ve lived longest, which is 5 years.” Mitski reflects her cross-cultural identity as "half Japanese, half American but not fully either", a feeling that is often reflected in her music, which occasionally discusses issues of belonging. “I didn’t even make friends because I knew it would be goodbye in a year. Everyone else just thought I was different & weird. When people looked at me they couldn’t recognize any of the history of me, like, ‘Where is she from? What’s her ethnicity? Who is she?’ I just didn’t make sense to anybody.” Her song “Your Best American Girl” (Slide 9) is a love song about an #interracial relationship & not feeling enough as a #WOC. “Your mother wouldn’t approve of how my mother raised me, but I do, I think I do / And you’re an all-American boy / I guess I couldn’t help trying to be your best American girl.” Once she moved back to the US, she was asked the What Are You question most #multiracials faced. “I discovered I was an #AsianAmerican when I arrived in the U.S. I didn't identify as that before I came here. People started calling me that & I started being treated in a specific way.” She now says she doesn't particularly identify with American or Japanese culture & her parents didn't encourage her to choose or adopt either. 🇺🇸🏳️🇯🇵 #mixedgirl https://www.instagram.com/p/CEAYTpal-JG/?igshid=1gyz6jnt10v4n
