50 years since the Fitz was lost on Lake Superior that November night.
Day two at Tahquamenon Falls State Park was busy. In the morning we took a short road trip up to Whitefish Point to visit the lighthouse and the famous Shipwreck Museum up there.
The Museum is very well done. They showed a film about the effort to raise the bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald and replace it with a bell inscribed with the names of the 29 sailors who died. They have the original bell from the wreck I n the museum. They have an annual bell ringing ceremony where they call the name of each sailor that died and a family member comes up and rings the bell. It was very touching to watch on the film. The wreck site is managed by the Canadian authorities so that it remains a memorial and is never desecrated.
The beach area at Whitefish Point is natural and beautiful. There is driftwood and rocks everywhere. I love driftwood - they are like wood sculpted by the sea. Or, in this case, the Lake. I got some great photos here. Check out Mike. He is getting tan! LOL
