It was about time I immersed myself in high classical culture. I visited the White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney today; they are currently showcasing the works of contemporary Chinese artists in a collection called “The Dark Matters”, with focus on the opposition of light and dark, black and white.
The first thing you see when stepping into the spacious area is the ominous cloud looming above your head. Created by an artist now living in New York, it was made from traditional xuan paper dipped in ink and printed with various objects like bricks, tyres, and needles-- all industrial items.
The cloud could symbolise a lot of things really: the corruption of Chinese politics, the environmental pollution, the hopeless depression felt by the artist, perhaps even the degradation of morals. And yet, upon closer inspection, the inside of the cloud was illuminated by a light.
It may represent hope, as long as someone is brave enough to step towards what daunts us. It is only paper after all-- perhaps the problems we face in society can be solved easily, if only one can make the first move.
‘Water Drops’ was another piece that caught my attention: white ceramic rain drops and their ripples atop a black background. Simplistic in its design, yet filled with possible meanings.
The tour guide mentioned how though the individual components were stationary, the piece as a whole seemed to move. I disagree. It seemed more like a moment suspended in time, with the ceramic medium representing the fragility of the scene. Perhaps the Taiwanese artists are trying to capture some emotion or memory, that would otherwise pass in a blink of an eye.
It struck me as odd how the piece was named ‘Water Drops’, instead of ‘Rain Drops’ as its contents might suggest. This gives me reason to believe that the rain may also be tears (same shape, after all), shedding light into the forlorn frustrations of these artists at the way society has changed, and their ‘golden ages’ passed. A very sombre piece indeed.
Pensive musings aside, I came across the Spice Alley at Kensington Street-- Kopi-Tiam. A set of food markets covering a plethora of rich Asian cuisines: Thai, Singaporean, and Malaysian just to name a few.
Most peculiar was that it was completely cashless, and ran so very efficiently. Definitely raises some questions about the future of our currencies and the prominence of technology.
The food was wonderful, by the way. Mamak style Mee Goreng and Spicy Korean Chicken.
While I’d be terrified to frequent this place at night, during the day the narrow walkways are super cute! The hustle and bustle is sequestered within the threads of alleyways; the instant you step out, you’re back into the unwavering hum of the urban life.
