So...Small Splatoon Theory Time that’s basically just fun conjecture...

Alot of people know that the Inklings in game are children, that’s obvious...But what’s not as obvious is what the adult Inklings look like...We get a hint with the picture of the original Squidbeak Splatoon, but a clearer image shows up on the Golden Disk on scroll 22...That’s an adult Inkling...And the Squid form they take upon adulthood...There’s...There’s a huge difference there...I approve of it too...But that’s not what this one’s about...It’s just a simple little thought, but honestly, there’s never been much of an explanation for creatures like Spyke or Annie...But we can draw a pretty solid conclusion, and it’s one that comes from observing the Octarian race...

The explanation for creatures like Spyke and Annie is simply that they’re part of the Inklish race, the Inkling equivalent of Octarian, like Inkling to Octoling.

Simply put, Annie and Spyke are like Octobombers and Octoballs...They fall within the same species as Inklings, but they’re just a separate kind...Honestly, it adds a level of diversity to each side of the game.

I first thought of this because of the difference in Octarian species, which struck me because the only diversity we’re presented for the Inklings are Mollusks and Anemones and Sea Urchins. The reason I developed this into a theory of singular race, diverse species cast is because of that picture, the one of the original Squidbeak Splatoon, of which Amoses Shellendorf was a member...This means that Inklings and Mollusks fought side by side during the war...As the many difference species of the Octarians do.

The second piece of this theory, which again is just conjecture, is that it might be possible for races like Spyke’s and Sheldon to produce and enter Ink in some way, as Octarian races do...I guess this is just the stuff of fanfics, to be honest, which just provides justification for the use of Sea Urchin or Anemone OCs in Splatoon fics involving Turf Wars and the like, and still it’s just conjecture, but I think it may still be solid in terms of lore? Maybe...
