It was just a dull Tuesday evening, but those were Lottie’s favourite kind of evenings. There was no big political rally to attend, no dinner with some big benefactor for her to dress up for and it left her completely, and gloriously, free. That certainly wasn’t a word she heard very often, it wasn’t something she got to experience every night. Some weeks were full of different events and free time was a thing of the past, but thankfully she’d completed her duties for the Gary Baker campaign that day. After spending the morning kissing some babies and reading to some preschoolers at a local school, she was feeling well and truly worn out, prepared to spend the rest of the day working on her next article for the magazine. But the second her boyfriend had informed her that he wasn’t at work, she’d been grabbing her purse and telling her Father she was off to a girlfriends house for the evening and not to wait up.
Pushing her glasses back up her nose, she gave a little sigh as she looked at her computer screen, not entirely enthused by her work. Lottie was working on a piece to promote the upcoming Harvest Festival in the magazine, her laptop rested on her crossed legs as she sat back against Chris’ sofa. As soon as she’d arrived, she’d stripped out of her dress and high heels, pulling on one of his t-shirts and nothing else, feeling far more comfortable that way. Of course, she’d made it clear to him that there was to be absolutely no funny business until she’d finished this article, because she had a deadline for the morning and definitely couldn’t miss it. The job might have seemed insignificant to some but to her, it was real, it gave her a voice, and for the most part, she enjoyed it. It was fun getting to review different restaurants or events around town, even if she could never truly take the one partner she wanted with her.
The thought of him had her lifting her head, a strand of hair falling in her face that had Lottie brushed it away with her hand. She could feel Chris’ eyes on her as he sat beside her on the couch, the television on in front of them, a true sense of domesticity between them. They didn’t always go on secret dates, sometimes it made her happy just to be at his place while she worked. ‘’Stop looking at me.”’ She accused him with a quirk of her eyebrow and a smirk in his direction, before glancing back down at her laptop. ‘’Anyone would think you’re trying to distract me, Christopher.’’ His full name was spoken teasingly, as if playfully scolding him for distracting her from her work.
