Hawkeye isn’t dumb or smart,he’s ditsy.

I’m here to make the argument that Clint Barton isn’t dumb blonde who can’t tell you 2+2 or some cool intelligent agent. He’s what I would consider ditsy.

He plays up the dumb blonde act to make sure people underestimate him,even people he’s close with. But most of it is an act. He most likely knows a good amount of physics and math so he can figure out trajectory. He’s a high ranking spy in Shield and a former assassin. He knows how to put on a act,and the circus background helps with playing the role of a goof ball.HOWEVER,not all of it is an act. He’s walked into several walls on accident. Once spelt his own name wrong, and left his hearing aids in the fridge.

he’s not totally smart but he’s not stupid thus why I consider him ditsy.

I feel like people only choose either dumb blonde or super cool spy when writing him. And it makes me kinda sad cause he’s a very complicated and diverse character.

(Small headcanon. I think the avengers also accidentally categorize him as either cool spy or dumb blonde,and the only person who knows he’s more complicated is Natasha but she won’t ruin his cover and call him out)

ShieldHawk AU [616 comics this is not an MCU household] where Steve and Clint are already dating when Clint first joins the Avengers BUT! Steve has no idea his boyfriend and Hawkeye are the same person. Because Clint knows Steve is a huge worrywart who would stress himself to an early grave if he had to deal with his lover being in the field but Clint also knows he really really wants to keep a better eye on Steve and make sure somebody has his back

So what does he do? Intentionally creates himself a herosona who is an absolute prick to everyone with the singular goal of throwing Steve off his scent. So at work Captain America is dealing with Hawkeye, resident foul-mouthed tempermental arsehole who keeps driving him up the wall for seemingly no reason, and then as Regular Steve Rogers he's greeted by his circus performing kind-of-a-loser boyfriend Clint Barton who could not, in Steve's eyes, ever hurt a fly

The real problem? Hawkeye was meant to be temporary. But whenever Clint tries leaving the group - content to know Steve does in fact have people to look after him - somebody races after him to drag him right back again. Which means eventually the hard lines he drew between Hawkeye and Clint start getting suspiciously blurred

In true Clint Barton fashion he chooses the convoluted difficult path (keeping up the lie as long as possible) rather than the clean easy one (coming clean) for reasons he can't understand either. The fallout, as one might imagine, is enormously catastrophic. Oops

A for effort, H-A-W-K-E-Y-E, Kate says as soon as she frees herself from her harness. They really need to come up with a real sign instead of just fingerspelling all the time. Maybe miming drawing a bow, then pointing to the eyes. Something cool. You have to get over your boner for that boomerang arrow.

“Did you just sign ‘angry penis’?” Sam says, distracted from his unresolved sexual tension with Natasha.

“Whatever,” Kate says. She flips her hair. “I’m learning.”
