Q&A // WILLY CHRISTIE'S DEBUT SOLO PROJECT: GREENHEART
Willy Christie contacted me over a month ago asking if I'd be interested in featuring a piece on his new solo project entitled "Greenheart." He linked me to the album and I instantly hit play as I worked on the computer. I didn't really know what to expect, maybe some kind of simplified psychedelia, considering his previous project Yam.
The first track, "Embryo" starts out seemingly simple with melodic classical guitar. Then violin is layered to create an instrumental, moody tone that remains present for the entirety of the album. As second track "Gaia" begins, a deep and ominous ohm-ing vocal is introduced, forming a dark and delicate soundscape for the listener. On the surface, Christie, wide-eyed and jovial, isn't necessarily the person you'd expect to produce this kind of malevolent yet hymnal sound, but his stripped-down, ethereal movement from psych-rock to bare-bone classical totally works for him, and is more than telling of his musical progression and overall spiritual exploration with sound.
For the photoshoot, Christie and I brainstormed ideas on where to go, but the mention of a "secret cave" near his home quickly became the location frontrunner. After driving down a wooded street, we parked the car and entered an ostensibly random spot leading us to a beaten trail. Before our next turn, Christie mentioned he could have sworn that a stripped and abandoned Jeep "was not there the last time I came."
We followed the trail a little longer and suddenly the entrance to a cave appeared. As we followed the path down a steep hill, the temperature severely dropped, maybe 20-30 degrees. How had I never heard of this place? Why isn't anyone down here now, considering it's one of the coolest spots to find in August, outside of your neighborhood pool? Christie and I covered the premises and concluded that we were presumably alone, for the time being at least...
Enjoy the interview with Christie and listen in at 11:30 today to 90.1 KKFI during the Wednesday Midday Medley show!
WH: How long have you been working on this album?
WH: Did you write these songs within a single sitting or kind of sporadically?
WC: The ideas themselves came to me at different times, some are over three years old. I just never had an outlet for these acoustic song ideas, so they just piled up until I had a decent amount of material.
WH: What’s going on with your other music project, Yam?
WC: Yam is unfortunately no more. I played a couple shows under the moniker Bobcat Barker. It was way more punky/stony stuff than Yam, but in between a drummer breaking his wrist and my own musical tastes changing, it’s safe to say that project is just chillin. I’m working with some great musicians right now on a new project, but these things take some serious time!
WH: What/who were your major influences when writing the album?
WC: Does marijuana count as an influence? I was listening to a lot of Grizzly Bear, but mostly their singer/guitarist Daniel Rossen’s solo stuff. I also was listening to a lot of Eastern music, like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Ustad Sultan Khan, and of course Ravi Shankar. In terms of aesthetic, I was definitely influenced by other acoustic artists like Nick Drake, Jose Gonzalez and Bert Jansch.
WH: I hear a violin? What other instruments can you play and when did you start getting into music/learning these instruments?
WC: There is definitely a violin on the album, as well as a cello. I didn’t play either of those instruments though. I can play guitar, bass, keyboards/synths, and drums — but guitar is my main instrument. I’ve been into music for a long time, thanks to my mom being a music teacher. I got my first guitar for Christmas when I was 14 and I’m still trying to learn everything.
WH: What was your recording/mixing process? Did you have any help?
WC: I recorded, mixed and “mastered” the whole thing at my house using Cubase. “Mastering” is in quotations because the equipment I have, compared to the equipment of actual mastering studios, might be a joke. I frequently used the internet to help me out, and I asked a lot of friends to give me feedback on the quality of recordings and mixes. But to answer your question, no help. I couldn’t afford it!
WH: If you could go back in time and collaborate with an artist, who would it be and why?
WC: Charles Mingus. He was the master of total expression in the moment, and by proxy, an incredible composer. I would even be fine with him just calling me an idiot for a few days straight.
Christie’s release show begins at 9:45 tomorrow, Wednesday August 27th at the Recordbar. Doors open at 9:00 p.m. Other acts include David Williams and Yes You Are. Check out the Facebook event page here for more details.
