Why do the seasons change when the earth is always about the same distance from the sun? It's the tilted axis, as this graphic shows. When we're tilted away, the sun's rays come to us at an angle. They have to go through a lot more atmosphere in order to reach us, and that makes them less strong. So it gets colder. That's why you need a coat in the winter even on a very sunny day.
