“There’s a relationship between low self-esteem and negative media portrayals of racial groups, in addition to an association between poor self-esteem and the paucity of portrayals of a particular group“
This quote stuck out to me while reading this article, although, most of the article contained extremely interesting and valuable information. Many children grow up watching the same TV shows nationally. Looking back onto the old shows I watched as a toddler and young child, many other individuals who were born around the same time, also watched the same shows. The problem is, these shows and their diversity are not lining up with the real world. Dobrow says that it is “out of sync with real environments” which I agree with. Although, I did enjoy how this article uses real statistics and facts. For example, now about one-third of characters are female, which is shown as an improvement from the past one-sixth of the characters being female. Statistics show evidence and state the real facts. The article even says that 60% of shows do not even have minority characters at all, which is an insane fact, that is unfortunately true. This article also pulls in Universities, such as Boston University and Tufts University, to show their studies and findings. I enjoy articles with proof, and statements to back up the facts, and that is what this article did. This article is short, but broadly goes over the lack of diversity in shows, and how we have improved, but we are not there yet, and shows have a lot of work to do to bring more diversity and equality.
