His head lulls along to her words, understanding what those words mean – they resonate through him, echoing, rebounding, pinging off particular memories. He remembers Bucky, BOY WONDER, falling from that plane, a childhood ruined as he’s thrust into the life of a soldier, under the thumb of a protective father; he remembers the Winter Soldier, refusing to recognize who he was, resigning himself to the monstrosity that HYDRA has constructed. He sees that same resignation in her and there is a piece of him that shatters, loathing that look of desperation, self-hatred and pity, mingling with a deep, aching sadness. The Captain reaches out, without thought, to clasp a large hand on her shoulder and to give it a gentle squeeze.
