     her lips crack into a bewildered smile. she scratches at her jaw, looking for an appropriate response to that. there isn’t one, of course.

     “    i was looking for you !    “ amélie exclaims, letting her hand thump against his chest. it’s been one hell of a week, and amélie likes unwinding with him. he’s fun ! a great conversationalist.

     “    i tried calling you, too.    “ amélie isn’t as big on phones as she used to be. no doubt it’s the constant paranoia that talon will sweep her up out of the blue. before talon, amélie would almost never miss a call. couldn’t with her husband working for an organization where his life remained at risk.

     “    never mind that ! where’d you even find a barrel, and why on earth would you climb in it ?    “ she wishes then that she’d met genji when they were both younger, before either of them heard of what overwatch was, before trauma changed their bodies into something else. amélie just knows he had to have been fun !

     amélie leans over, assisting genji to his feet with ease. the struggle lies in keeping the composure on her face, making sure to not even give a twitch of the lips.

     “    that was…quite the tumble,    “ amélie notes, voice still even. gérard would have laughed. god, how he would’ve laughed. her brows raise as she looks him over, the sparkle in her eyes the only hint she’d found genji falling to be funny.

     “    are you sure you’re all right ?    “

     amélie re-hooks her arm through his, continuing to walk them down the crowded street. crowds still make her nervous but her general demeanor — open and casual — shows her improvement in dealing with it. as does the amount of skin she shows off: she’s clad in shorts that are short enough to show her thigh tattoo off, midriff exposed in a crop top. sunglasses are perched on top of her head.

     “    we can’t be losing you now !    “

     the words hit her like a bullet: her nostrils flare, throat bobbing as she swallows roughly. the swallow sounds crushingly loud even to her own ears but her throat still feels stopped up. i’m going to cry, amélie realizes thickly. i’m going to cry, and i always forget just what that feels like until it’s too late.

     amélie forces herself to cough, to do anything, that makes her look a shade less devastated. it’s enough to make her want to wobble, double over in pain.

     “    i know,    “ amélie says quietly. maybe he can’t even hear her.  “    i tried to be careful.  “ her lip quivers.

     she’d tried so hard ! she was someone’s wife — a damned good one - until that was no longer the case. had amélie the knowledge she has now, she would have never given gérard the time of day. he’d be alive maybe, amélie thinks. or it’d be another broken woman standing here in front of genji instead of her.

     “    i tried,    “ amélie says again, trying to sound less upset than before, but the words are chopped up from her sobs starting to tear from her throat. her lovely face screws up in agony. gérard hadn’t even really realized he was being killed. it was too fast, throat cut in an instant.

     “    i had my shot, i guess,    “ her words still grit passed her teeth, fighting against the waver of her tone. amélie takes a deep breath to compose herself, for herself. she feels no embarrassment at her breakdown. she gets to do this, because it was stripped away from her for so long. amélie swipes her fingers at the furiously falling tears, knowing she’s smearing mascara as she goes.

     “    sure you can handle my best shot ?    “ amelie questions him. there’s no condescension in her voice but a sparkling mischief that wraps around her in a warm glow. amelie doesn’t doubt genji’s skill for a moment: this is someone from the shimada clan after all. she’s eyeing him head to toe, cutting a quick circle as she thinks of the best way to attack. he has no prior knowledge of her fighting style, that should help. amelie plants herself not too far from him, smile still broad.

    “    should we make some kind of bet ? first one to pin wins ?    “ amelie’s still staring intensely at genji and it doesn’t match the gentleness in her tone. it won’t bother her if she loses ! it’s all a bit of fun in the end.

     amelie pushes a hip out, crossing her arms over her chest. she’s dressed sensibly to fight, hair tied up painfully and high. “     you know, if i was really giving you my best shot, it’d kill you.    “ she can easily imagine the weight of widow’s kiss in her arms. yes, surely her best shot would kill him.

     “ come on. “

     amelie stands down the road from the place she pretends to call a home. it isn’t much, but she’s considering finding something nicer now that she’s warming up to the idea she deserves to live somewhere decent. of course, she’ll still float around more often at the houses of her friends. she just prefers that.

     it’s nice to see genji again after all of this time. she’s almost surprised at the change in him, but having met zen for herself, she understands. she hasn’t reached forgiveness for herself or comfort. that’ll take time. amelie has faith, though. genji is living proof that it’s manageable. she shifts her weight to the opposite leg and cradles the flowers he’s given her in a gesture of kindness with a dazzling tenderness. she can’t wait to put them into a vase.

    “    you can see me whenever you’d like, cherie. thank you for your company,    “ amelie says, voice oozing with sincerity. it alights on her features and shaves the age away from around her eyes.

    amelie cautions a step forward, wind biting at her purple dress, making it nip at the back of her knees. she leans over to press a kiss to genji’s cheek. “    don’t be a stranger !    “

     the offer stops amelie cold. she looks at familiar faces, faces she can name, and looks back at genji with a small shake of her head. a hand clenches at her side.

     “     mister shimada --    “   the formality of widowmaker remains, even with her departure. she’ll never truly be gone. amelie will always be a spider.   “    genji. that’s very kind, but i don’t think should. thank you.     “ 

     genji should recognize the way amelie holds her pain, tightly wound.

     “    maybe another time.     “   maybe in another life, she thinks.
