Your house was built further in the forest away from the village in the plains at least a few miles away, you used to live in the comforting home where you had the golems to protect you. Family, friends, so much more but curiosity took over of the stranger that always caught your eye who stood on the outskirts of town.
The sound of a purr filled your ears as your cat was the only thing left from the village. Soft orange fur basked in the sunlight beneath the windows as you sat up off the couch, you’ve been delving into books lately. Recently going back and forth between the library and your home to get some statements on what stands outside your house at night.
You see it, sometimes. It’s tall, tall enough that it would have to bend down to walk through your doorway. It wasn’t exactly human, more like a mythical beast. But not a zombie, nor a creeper. Sometimes, it looked like a spider standing on two legs and then it would look like a normal human being. Nothing was written in the books about it, at least not in your library. Every time you ask the librarian about a book that has a big looking spider that really isn’t a spider, they look at you like you just killed their dog.
You tried to take matters into your own hands, you have tried approaching it. Many times, but it runs. It was skittish, but it didn’t seem like it hated you. You can’t tell, but sometimes in the morning you wake up to see hair on your front steps or even some sewage that did not look sanitary. You put it in a jar whenever you get these odd gifts, you can’t just throw a gift away, that’s rude. You had learned over time that whatever it is really likes cooked meat, and golden apples. You observed that when you threw out the burnt steak you ruined when you left your furnace running longer than it should have, because when you turned your back in your peripheral vision a black blur had made its way to where the meat was and ran off into the deep foliage of the forest.
The book you had been reading about spiders only was set onto your coffee table as you had moved to the kitchen to grab the spare bowl of cooked meat you had left over for the creature. Your mama always raised you to be kind, no matter who it is. You held the bowl at your hip as you went to open the door, head turned to look at the interior of the house and to reassure yourself that your cat isn’t running out like usual due to the strange deaths of your livestock. When you had turned around, you were met with a large shadow and the tall figure of the creature standing a few feet away from your front steps.
You were frozen, its eyes stared directly into yours as a shiver found your body. It never got this close, it was always at the treeline.
You stepped down a step, noticing the creature flinching back a little bit and without hesitation you had ushered out softly, “Easy, I just got food for you. The stuff you like,”
The reassurance dripped off your tongue like you had been saying it to the creature for months, you have. You can’t tell why you want to get so close, or understand why your chest aches every time it runs off. You had reached a hand to grab a piece of cooked chicken breast from the night before, that’s when you noticed it moved closer.
The creature had slowly moved closer to your form on the porch steps, bending down slightly to peer into the bowl as its long fingers extended. As if hesitating, a low gurgle rumbled from its throat as a distorted voice had reached your ears, “ood,”
Your eyebrows pinched at that, it never talked. You didn’t think it could, you slowly extended your hand towards it. Giving a simple yet encouraging nod, “Come on, it’s okay,”
You didn’t move when the creature leaned down directly in front of you, one of its arms reached and grasped the railing as its slender fingers gripped tightly before its other wrist had grabbed yours. Head tilting down, inhaling the scent of the cooked chicken as you felt the velvet like fuzz against your skin from its hand that had captured your wrist. A low growl had emanated from its throat, before letting your wrist go and snagging the chicken breast from you. Its coiled back quickly, feet moving like it was about to bolt as it stood there momentarily.
“Han’ ouu,” It gurgled in that same distorted voice, before it bolted into the tree-line. Leaving you standing there on the porch in shock at how easy that interaction went.
You let out an exhale you didn’t even know you were holding. Stepping off the porch as your eyes looked into the foliage where it had run off into, it was progress. When a loud holler was heard from one of your cows you had initiated to turn yourself around, letting out a groan when you noticed that another one of your livestock was killed, running a hand over your face as you groaned. Supposedly you did get a good thing, and a bad thing as well. Lucky you.
