A Klaroline drabble for Caryn (widowofwinter) as punishment for not watching her movie choice as part of the kcmoviechallenge. Keep in mind I haven't written a drabble for a long time but I hope you enjoy!
Klaus and Caroline weren’t always best friends, in fact when they were children they actually hated each other. Caroline refused to forgive Klaus for pulling on her hair or ruining her dolls whenever she went to the Mikaelsons house, and Klaus thought Caroline was a brat, always snitching and getting him into trouble. The pair disliked each other so much that Caroline threw herself a party when he left for college, never quite getting over the childhood resentment.
It wasn’t until Caroline was 17, and Klaus was visiting for winter break that she began to feel something else, and even then, it took her years to admit that she felt anything other than hatred towards Klaus like she had for most of her life.
“Leave me alone Damon,” Caroline yelled, pulling her arm out of his grasp as he tried to catch up to her, “I don’t want to be with you anymore.”
“Babe, you don’t mean that. It was one time. Hayley was just a little piece of ass I wanted on the side,” Damon shouted at her retreating figure, getting angrier as she continued to walk away from him, “No one else is going to want you. I’m all that you have.”
Caroline ignored Damon’s words, pulling her winter coat tighter around her body to fend off the cold. It wasn’t until she heard a loud ‘What the hell’ and a thud from a body hitting the footpath that she turned around to see Klaus standing over Damon with a bloody fist. Caroline looked at him incredulously, having forgotten that Rebekah had told her he was back in town.
“Well no one can say he didn’t deserve that one love,” Klaus declared with a cheeky smile, walking towards her slowly, “Now how about you and I go see what my darling sister is up to tonight? I’m sure she’d love to hear all about this.”
They left Damon on the ground near the Mystic Grill, deciding that the frozen footpath would numb his injuries enough for him to call for help, or at the very least call Stefan for a lift home.
Rebekah wasn’t at the Mikaelson manor that night, opting to go see a movie with Kol last minute. It was at this point that their friendship began, after Klaus not wanting to leave Caroline alone so soon after a break up, fetched her favourite ice-cream and sat through a screening of the notebook, albeit with a few complaints.
When Klaus went back to college, the pair continued to talk, visiting each other throughout the years and staying in close contact even though they attended college’s hours away from each other. Rebekah was known to grumble about how Klaus should just marry Caroline already whenever the three were together, causing the pair to avert their eyes and Caroline to blush.
Klaus and Caroline weren’t always best friends, but eventually, when the time was right, they became something more.
