So… a couple of you might have noticed my complete lack of posting the continuation of Widows Pique. I think I’ll have to admit that it is on a little hiatus whilst my own life becomes more hospitable for writing.
I’m sorry for those that are waiting. Especially as I’m so close to finalising it! Hopefully in the new year I will find the time and place to pick this up again.
In the meantime I wish you all love and happiness and hopeful times ahead!

Penny grabbed so tightly onto Henry's hand that he snapped his head towards her, mouthing the words 'Are you ok?' as they walked up the steps to the school playground. She felt like a cowboy entering a swing door saloon in a Western. So many pairs of eyes watching them. Shocked by Henry's presence and Penny's unhidden stomach.
Amidst the hushed atmosphere, small pre-schoolers whizzed around on their scooters, tugged on their mothers leggings and fussed in their push chairs as the mostly female crowd studied the pair as they walked towards the back of the school.
Julia trotted over, in impractically high heels to dramatically display her friendship with Penny.
"Henry, this is Julia, Jules - Henry."
Her theatrics increased as she air-kissed both of Henry's cheeks "So nice to finally meet you Henry, my goodness you're even bigger than I'd remembered" as she held her beautifully manicured hand against his chest and giggled.
Penny snorted quietly as a few more mums sidled up to introduce themselves.
Before long, several selfies had been taken and Henry had thoroughly charmed the school mums with his witty banter and public displays of affection with Penny. Her light grey shirred summer dress clung to her ample chest and flowed over her bump. The empire waistline making her pregnancy unmistakeable now. Most had just stared, but on seeing Henry proudly holding her tummy and rubbing it casually as he chatted, Penny began to receive several congratulations and smiles.
As the children flowed out, the noise level returned and Henry had another wave of selfie requests from Mums feeling braver now that they could use their children as an excuse to get close to the actor.
Ben's class was one of the last to be dismissed. In true 8 year old fashion he barrelled up to Penny with his book bag, water bottle and lunch bag before realising Henry was there.
Ben sprung up into his arms, gripping Henry with all of his might. "Missed you Bud," Henry whispered as Ben continued to cling to him.
"Daddy Henry, you came back!" he squealed, his eyes shut and his grubby hands gripping the back of Henry's t-shirt.
"I always come back buddy, never forget that."
It was Henry's turn to grip Penny's hand tightly as they sat in the warm darkness of the ultrasound room. Pre-warmed gel was squirted onto Penny's tummy as the doctor fiddled and scrolled with one hand and lifted and twisted the wand in the other, pushing hard against Penny's firm stomach.
"Does that hurt honey?" Henry asked, hoping it would make the consultant press more lightly.
"It's fine Hen, just relax."
The fast swooshing of the baby's heartbeat filled the room as tears flowed down Henry's cheeks. When the screen showed the head and then quickly the legs as the baby wriggled inside. Henry let out a strange noise. Penny turned to see his ugly crying face again, she couldn't help but giggle.
"Oh, Hen, makes it seem so much more real doesn't it?" as she squeezed harder on his hand as he smiled, unable to speak.
"So, are we wanting to know the gender?" The doctor asked, looking over the top of his glasses. Both Henry and Penny nodded anxiously as the doctor flicked the wand and repositioned the view.
"If you take a look here, baby is clearly showing us that she is a little girl, lovely," he smiled at them both as Penny shuddered with happy tears.
"My girls." Henry managed as he rubbed Penny's forearm. Desperately trying to hold back his own tears without success.
After Penny was wiped, sat up and sorted out, the Consultant ran through the options for the labour and delivery. Henry asked so many questions, Penny was impressed with his level of understanding and his sweet protective manner over her wellbeing. She still wasn't convinced that she needed to be in London for the delivery, but didn't want to have that argument in front of the doctor.
On leaving the hospital they were both anxious about being papped, so opted for separate cars. Henry didn't want to risk stressing Penny out with any attention from the press, despite wanting to shout his excitement from the rooftops. The cars met up again outside Henry's parents house, Henry waiting to help Penny out, like the gentleman he always was.
Marianne had become very protective over Penny since her spell in hospital, fussing over her more than she ever did her boys. Penny's fears over Henry's family disapproving of their surprise addition were completely unfounded and their excitement at the new arrival was palpable.
"Oh Penny, just look at you." Marianne swept towards Penny, embracing the sides of her stomach, then pulling her in for one of her trademark hugs.
Colin slapped Henry on the back in a proud and congratulatory manner, ushering him into the kitchen after the ladies.
Before she knew it, Penny was sat down in the window seat being shown pictures of Henry as a baby. His eyes were unmistakeable even then.
"Oh my goodness, he was adorable Marianne, such a chubby little thing too!"
"Ha, yes, he was like a little sumo wrestler with all those little rolls. He was 10lb 6oz too! Good job he wasn't my first or I wouldn't have tried again." Marianne instantly regretted her words and placed a hand on Penny's knee. "I'm sure this little one won't be that big my dear."
Penny sat back, gripping her belly and looking down. "I don't know Marianne, they're measuring big, and I feel a lot bigger than I did with Ben.
At that point Henry and Colin entered the room with tea and biscuits.
"Mum, really?! Not the baby album." he cringed, kissing Penny on the top of her head as he sat down next to her.
"His brothers nicknamed him Jabba, you can see why now can't you?!" Colin joked as Henry closed up the album whilst giving his own father the stink eye.
Henry leaned into Penny's stomach, cupping his hands together.
"Don't listen to Pops little one, he's getting sarcastic in his old age. Your big brother is going to be nothing but nice to you."
Penny blushed at Henry's soppiness in front of his parents. Marianne gazed happily at them both. Penny felt a little uncomfortable with the attention.
The conversation changed towards their earlier consultants appointment. Penny decided to broach the subject of not having the baby in London.
"It's not that I don't like the hospital Henry, it's just that it's so far from home and they're not worried about anything. In fact recently I've been considering a home birth."
"No." Henry abruptly stated. "Out of the question."
"Henry!" Marianne reproached. "There's nothing wrong with home-birthing. I had Charlie at home and it was perfectly safe. Alex was a home birth, and Poppy too!"
Penny was shocked by Henry's attitude and her emotions quickly bubbled up. She breathed deeply to try and quell her tears. She swallowed and continued. "I'm just considering it at the moment, but as I'm the one who has to squeeze a person out of me I think I get to choose where and how."
Henry cringed at his reaction. "I'm sorry Pen. I, just want you and the baby to be safe."
"Well that's my preference too honey. Remember, I've done this before ok?"
Colin squirmed uncomfortably in his seat, not wanting to get involved in any arguments.
"More tea?" he offered, changing the subject.
Driving back home they were both quiet, lost in their own thoughts. Henry didn't like it when plans were changed, he felt uneasy and a little panicked thinking his daughter could be born without a doctor nearby.
Penny was still smarting from Henry's bolshy attitude earlier, she hated being treated like she didn't know her own mind.
Henry knew he'd upset her, but he also thought she was being a little naive and selfish perhaps. Not that he would dare say that to her. His brothers were right when they'd warned him not to cross a pregnant woman, Penny certainly was quick to snap back at him lately. He actually found it quite endearing, in fact everything she did lately made his heart melt. Her little waddle, her many cushions in the bed, putting on her shoes, even getting in the car. Seeing her carrying their baby was truly fascinating to him and made him feel so unbelievably proud and protective of her.
He reach over and placed his hand on her thigh, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"I love you Penny Green, do you know that?"
Penny smiled, turning to look at him as he kept his eyes on the road ahead. A warm smile on his handsome face.
She gripped his hand, then ran it up along his shirt sleeve to his shoulder as he grabbed her hand again he brought it to his lips and kissed it.
Penny was 28 weeks pregnant now and feeling it. She knew that being an older mum would be hard work, but some days all she wanted to do was float in the tub. Henry was ridiculously attentive though, to the point where she was pretty sure he would bathe, dress and feed her if she let him.
She looked at her crinkled fingertips and decided she needed to leave the bath, heaving herself forward as her aching bones protested. On cue, Henry appeared, grasping her under her arms and taking her weight as she climbed out, embarrassed that she was becoming so reliant on his help already.
"Thanks Hen, it's ok though, I can still get out of the bath honey." she smiled.
"I know Pen, I was just here so thought I'd lend a hand", he was aware that he was fussing too much and worried that he was driving her nuts in doing so.
"Did you decide what you are going to wear yet honey?" He asked tentatively.
It seemed that every day there was a new delivery of something or other baby or pregnancy related. Henry seemed hell bent on buying every gadget, gismo and toy for their little girl, as well as cute outfits for Penny. Henry was living out his fantasy as Penny indulged his love of seeing her dress up for him. He couldn't get enough of her new sexy shape and her growing bump. She suspected her tiredness was in part due to Henry's increased libido, which was pretty healthy beforehand. Not that she was complaining, the constant adoration and manhandling was doing wonders for Penny's confidence. She hadn't even needed much persuading to have a photoshoot with one of Henry's favourite photographers.
Penny chose a cute button front emerald green dress with a scoop neck, high waistline and delicate puffed sleeves. She also let him chose two more outfits for her. Knowing how much enjoyment he was getting from it.
She finished her makeup and carefully pulled the dress over her head. The fabric was thin, stretchy and beautifully soft. She moaned quietly at the sensation as she smoothed and pulled the dress into the right position. Even she couldn't stop brushing her hands over her large stomach, feeling especially sensitive lately.
With a final fluff of her curls she headed downstairs to join Henry, the photographer and his assistant. Henry stopped mid sentence as he spotted Penny on the stairs. Neil and Abby followed his gaze as they all watched Penny gracefully but carefully descend the last two steps.
"And here she is, Neil, Abby. This is my Penny"
Penny felt flushed with the attention, but mostly Henry's intense, loving but licentious stare. He even licked his lips, making Penny shudder slightly with excitement. She hoped the shoot wouldn't take too long, she desperately needed to be alone with him.
At first Penny felt a little self conscious posing for photos around the house and garden. Henry of course was a natural, loving the intimate poses, knowing how great the shots would look already. Nick was a real sweetheart, so generous with his praise and flattery that by the end of the shoot Penny almost felt like a model.
"Oh Penny, you are just gonna love these shots. Those last ones against the door - mmm - just divine."
"Thanks Nick, I'm glad you got some you're happy with." she added as Henry kissed the side of her head for the hundredth time that day.
By the time the equipment was packed away and farewells were said Penny flopped down on the sofa to rest her aching feet. Henry was quick to offer a foot rub as he grinned up at her.
"What?" she asked, wondering what was so funny.
"Can't a man just enjoy rubbing his wife's feet my love?"
"Not as much as you seem to be Mr Cavill. Plus, I'm not your wife yet, merely your fiancee."
Henry detected an undertone to her statement.
"There is nothing mere about being my betrothed young lady." He ran his warm hand slowly up her calf muscle, to behind her thigh under her dress, finishing at her large, soft behind. He crawled up towards her carefully, slowly kissing her thigh, her stomach, her arms, her neck and then her lips.
Penny ran her fingers through his growing curls, thickened but still soft with product. She began unbuttoning his shirt. He watched her fingers then looked up at her with quizzical eyebrows.
"Frisky again Mrs Green? You will be the death of me." he growled as he knelt up to undo his jeans and Penny sat up to continue with his shirt. Henry helped her to stand as he deftly pulled her dress up over her head and her knickers down. Carefully allowing her to get her balance as she stepped out of them. He remained crouched below her, looking up at her beautiful round stomach. As much as he couldn't wait to meet their daughter he would miss her like this, and wondered if she would consider more children after.
"You." he spoke between kisses "Are. The. Most. Sexiest. Woman. I. Have. Ever. Met."
Penny was already super aroused. His words, his kisses, his warm breath on her skin sent shockwaves of delight through her. She'd removed her bra and played with her nipples as Henry swept two fingers through her folds and lewdly licked his fingers clean. She pulled him up and kissed him so fiercely he almost lost his balance. Her nails clawed at his back. Her large firm stomach pushed against his newly softened one. Henry's hands slid all over her, grabbing at her, squeezing at her. He found her breasts again and sucked her swollen nipples into his hungry mouth, his tongue swirling as she moaned in exquisite pleasure.
"Hen, I need you, inside me, now."
He chuckled, loving her desperation "Oh my beautiful girl, does someone want Daddy's cock inside them?"
Penny was too far gone to chuckle at his words, she was ready to beg if he asked.
"Please, yes, please Daddy, I need your cock. I need it now. Fuck me, fuck me hard."
Henry's dick twitched at her words. He grabbed her by the waist and spun her around.
"Lean forward, kneel on the sofa." he ordered. "'kay?" he quickly checked to make sure she was comfy. Again Henry ran his fingers through Penny's sex, using her wetness to smear over his steel hard dick. This position had proved very successful for them recently now that Penny was too big for some of their other favourite positions.
"Henry, now!" Penny shouted as Henry smirked at her bossiness.
"Yes my princess. Uh. Take. Daddy's cock. In your. Uh. Tight. Little. Pussy"
Penny loved his dirty talk, each time she pushed him to say filthier things to her. He treated her so gently at every other time she craved the contrast when they were intimate. To hear such a polite, charming man say such dirty, erotic words was such a turn on for Penny.
The sound of his hips slapping against Penny's backside filled the house. she shouted for him to go harder and faster. Henry worried he might hurt her but also desperately wanted to satisfy. Not wanting to upset Penny, he upped his pace and energy.
"Fuck, Hen, so, fucking, good. I'm so close, so, so close…, please"
Henry's nostrils flared as sweat poured down his reddened face. Concentrating so hard not to disappoint her and come first.
Penny braced herself against the back of the sofa, head down, watching everything jolt with Henry's vigour.
Neither of them spoke as they both concentrated on Penny's climax. Henry bit deep into his bottom lip as he readjusted his grip of Penny's hips.
She roared as the ecstasy washed over her, Henry gratefully joining her in his release. Relieved that he managed to hold out. They slowly rocked together, as the electric pulses ebbed away and they became aware of their surroundings again.
"Thank you honey, I - I really needed that." Penny whispered shyly.
Henry kissed her back as his warm hands found their way to her stomach, rubbing it gently as he caught his breath.
"Lets get cleaned up and I'll make us some lunch mama" Henry gathered up their clothing and offered his hand to lead a pink faced Penny upstairs.
Tiredness washed over her as Henry clipped up her hair and turned on the shower. Guiding her again, he held the shower head and ran the soothing warm water over her body before doing the same himself. Penny's blinks became slower and slower as Henry washed her. Wanting to savour every moment, but knowing how tired she was, he had to be quick.
Once showered he sat her down and dried her off. Her eyes were completely closed now, she was totally at his will as he gently rubbed her soft skin. After quickly drying himself he picked her up and placed her on top of the covers, making sure he propped her onto her side with her many pillows. He stood for several moments watching her sleep, committing this moment to memory. Consumed by such a powerful feeling of love and contentment. Knowing he would do absolutely anything for the woman sleeping before him.
An hour later Henry sat on the armchair, thinking back to their earlier fun, but also Penny's words about 'merely being his fiancee'. He was desperate to call her his wife, he tried to imagine their wedding, the potential intrusion from the press, the reaction of his fans. He just couldn't risk upsetting Penny by even discussing it at the moment. He daydreamed about seeing her walk down the aisle, flowers in her hair, freckles on her nose… a creak from upstairs woke him from his musings.
Penny tried on her new striped jersey dress and was surprised at how well it fitted, sure her arse looked huge, her tummy was huge and her boobs, well, they were ridiculous, but sod it, she was pregnant and there was no disguising it now so she might as well embrace it! A small voice at the back of her head whispered, you sure about this hun? Before an even louder one told it to fuck off.
Downstairs she found a puppy eyed Henry, retrieving lunch from the fridge.
"My word Penelope, you are spoiling me today." he growled as her reached for her waist.
"This? It's just something casual for the school run Hen!"
"Hmm.." he pondered, spinning her around for inspection.
"What, is it too clingy?"
"It certainly fits where it touches Pen, that's why I like it so much." he began kissing her neck as his hands roamed her backside.
"Mr. Cavill, that's enough of that! You have a hungry pregnant woman before you, it's practically an emergency." she quipped as she wiggled towards the dining table.
Penny smirked at the Mrs Cavill mug that Henry always liked to use for her. Holding it up to toast her handsome chef as he glugged from his sports bottle. Henry paused and almost made a Mrs Cavill comment, but thought better of it. Penny noticed his apprehension.
"What is it Cavill, fess up. I can tell when you want to say something."
"What? I'm just having a drink."
"Fine, don't tell me then." she half joked, narrowing her eyes in suspicion.
"It's, it's." shit - he thought, why am I even saying anything? "I was thinking about what you said earlier, about 'merely' being my fiancee. You know I'd marry you tomorrow if I could Pen."
Penny continued to side eye him, wondering what he wasn't saying.
Henry continued under Penny's intense glare. "I know that you didn't want to have a child out of wedlock, and weddings are complicated, and hard to keep under wraps from the press. The last thing I want is to cause you any additional stress at the moment, my love."
"What are you saying Henry?"
"Nothing really, I seem just to have random words coming from my mouth at the moment without making much sense. I, I, just want you to be my wife. I want you to feel secure and safe and, and proper. Shit, I shouldn't have said anything."
"Henry, are you trying to say that you want to get married before the baby arrives?" Penny sat back in her seat, subconsciously rubbing her stomach.
"No, honey, it's a terrible idea, not enough time, too much stress. We need to focus on little legs arrival. I shouldn't have said anything, I'm sorry."
"Why are you sorry, I want this too Hen. But there's no way we can find a venue, a dress, organise the reception in such a short space of time. I don't want to be going into labour and getting married on the same day hun."
"I don't care about the party, or the venue. I just want to be your husband. If you really want this too Pen, I can make it happen - you wouldn't need to lift a finger - unless you wanted to of course. I just don't want to stress you out honey."
Penny blew out her deep breath, "Ok, let's do it."
"Really? You really want to Pen?" Henry stood up, his hands reaching behind his head in excitement.
"Definitely, as long as you don't mind me waddling down the aisle looking like a marshmallow."
"Come here." Henry beckoned as he walked around the table to her. "Let's go get ourselves hitched Mrs Green."

It seems every time I post a chapter I have to apologise - this time has been the longest gap between chapters - for which I am so sorry. My life has been very chaotic, with far too many distractions.
I do hope you enjoyed reading about this goofy pair again as they prepare for parenthood as a couple. Thank you all for your patience xxx

Widow's Pique
Henry and Penny stepped out of the tiny cottage into the cold, fresh, mid-morning light. Henry's arm around her shoulder, Penny's arm around his waist.
He squeezed her even closer and kissed her hair as they walked along the gravel path towards the main house.
Penny was keen to see how Ben was doing. Henry was already cringing in embarrassment remembering how drunk he was last night.
"It'll be fine honey, don't worry," Penny said, sensing his apprehension.
"Hmmn" was all he offered.
Ben was just about to run up the stairs when he spotted his mum at the door.
"Mummy! I saw a fox!!" he told her excitedly
"Oh, wow, that's cool. How was last night? Did you sleep ok?"
"Yeah, fine. Although, Hughie kept farting." he stated, matter of factly.
"Oh dear, sounds stinky" she laughed, grabbing him from the step and pulling him towards her.
"Missed you, Sausage."
"Missed you too Mummy", and he hugged her back tightly then jumped back down to face Henry.
"Hey bud" Henry fist-bumped him as Ben grabbed his forearm and pulled him along the hall into the kitchen.
"Good Morning!" was the chorus of voices to their arrival. Tom and Kate were in the kitchen with Brian whilst Rene was laying the table. Tom's brother Lewis was delving into the wine fridge as his girlfriend Emma gathered glasses from the large black cabinet. Apart from the sounds of the children playing upstairs it seemed like the other guests had left.
The house looked so different without the girly decorations and the furniture back in its rightful places. It was a cavernous space with black painted steel poles supporting the vaulted ceiling, not too dissimilar to Penny's. But it was sparsely decorated with elegant mid-century pieces dotted around, giving it a more cosmopolitan feel than her farmhouse. Penny felt bad that it had all been tidied in her absence.
"Oh Katie, sorry I wasn't here to help with the clean up"
"Shut it you," she said kissing Penny on her cheek "the old folks did most of it before we were even up"
"Hey less of the old you cheeky mare!" came the reply from Rene as she walked towards the couple.
"How are you feeling today my Dear Henry?" she placed her hands on his chest reaching up for a double cheek kiss before kissing Penny once on the cheek and hugging her tight.
"Surprisingly perky Rene, considering" Henry replied, with an uncomfortable cough.
"Ugh, you fucker." Kate responded, shouting over the sizzling pans on the stove, looking considerably peaky herself.
Penny walked up and hugged her friend, trying to take over from the cooking.
"Bugger off, sit down and relax Pen" Kate pushed her away with her hip as Tom pecked her on the cheek and ushered her towards the dining table, instead she went back to Henry as he bear hugged her from behind. He looked so handsome in his simple dark blue jeans and grey t-shirt. His tanned, hairy forearms smoothed over Penny's stomach as she flinched awkwardly before leaning back into him.
"How did you guy's sleep last night" Kate shouted, unashamedly winking at them.
"That bed is so comfy Katie" Penny avoided the question "Henry passed out on it as soon as his head hit the pillow"
Henry protested at this truth "Hey, they don't need to know that!"
"I found this dickhead in the flowerbed last night. I was looking everywhere for him! He squashed my bloody hellebores!" Kate scowled at her husband.
"Yeah" Tom admitted proudly, "Didn't quite make it back from dropping Henry off!"
"Sorry mate," Henry squirmed, vaguely recalling his help. "I'm not normally such a lightweight"
"You're telling me, you fucking weigh a ton fella!" Tom slapped Henry on the back as Henry took a chair at the table.
"Ah, Christ, sorry" was all he said.
"No need to apologise Henry, you were just enjoying yourself. At least you didn't try and piss in the wardrobe again like Brian" Rene cackled, standing behind Henry, rubbing his arm.
Everyone creased up laughing, except for Brian who pointed his finger angrily at his oversharing wife.
Penny sent Ben up to grab the rest of the kids as a variety of fried delights filled up the centre of the table.
Lewis started topping off the wine glasses as Penny blocked hers from being filled.
"I think I had enough last night Lew, plus I've got to drive home today and drop Sleeping Beauty off at the airport too" she gestured at Henry as he crooked his neck at her name for him.
Henry, stood up, glossing over Penny's nickname "By the way everyone, before the kids come back, I must apologise for my behaviour last night, I realise it wasn't the best first impression to make."
Everyone laughed at Henry's embarrassment
"Shut the fuck up Cavill, you were a legend" Tom winked cheekily at him.
"I agree with the husb, Henry, next time we have a party you're on the guestlist ok. Seriously nothing to apologise for darling" Kate gave Henry an affectionate slap on his arse as she walked to her seat, her face making an 'ooh' shape as she looked at Penny.
Penny didn't think she could love her friend any more than right at this very moment.
Tom tapped his fork on his wine glass to quieten the table "I propose a toast. To good women' he nodded at the four ladies seated before him "great families and Henry fucking Cavill"
"Here Here" Brian chirped up as Henry blushed and nodded in appreciation.
Henry grabbed Penny's hand and laced their fingers together as she pulled his hand towards hers and kissed the back of it.
After a noisy, leisurely brunch Henry and Penny helped clear up the piles of greasy plates and pans. The children ran outside again to expend some energy.
"You'll have to come up and meet Boris, Pen" Kate looked out towards the garden.
"Remind me who Boris is Katie?"
"The horse Pen! My birthday present?!"
"You called him Boris?!" Penny chuckled.
"Had to, he's got a huge cock and no balls" Kate beamed, watching Henry choke on his own spittle.
-
Everyone apart from Brian and Rene walked up to the stables, the children excited to show Ben their ponies.
"How many horses do you have Kate?" Henry asked
"Just six, at the moment" She glanced at Tom as he gave her the stink eye
"It's staying at six woman! These beasts cost an arm and a leg to run."
"They're not tractors Thomas, they're part of the family. Honestly, the man has no empathy" Kate stuck her middle finger up at Tom lovingly. "Three of them are ponies, you know, for the kids. Jasper is a nine year old American Standard, lovely chap, he was my first when we moved here, but Hughie rides him more than I do now as he thinks he's too big for the ponies. Then we have Bilbo, who's a thoroughbred, we think he's about 14 so he's getting on a bit. We took him in for a friend but he's not one for the children. Then we have Boris, here he is."
"An Arabian? He's a big boy isn't he?" Henry commented, offering his palm to the animal.
"Yeah, 16.4" Kate said proudly. She'd been riding before she could walk, and always prided herself on her ability to ride even the biggest, most powerful horses.
"Blimey," Henry smiled, as Boris knocked his head against Henry's.
"Ben was keen to have his first ride so I'm going to tack up the ponies and Jasper if you want to help Henry?" Kate asked.
"I'd love to!" Henrys face lit up at the opportunity.
Twenty minutes later all four horses were ready to go. Riding was already second nature to Kate's children who all trotted off with their favourites around the paddock. Tom stayed with Suzy, his six year old, not fully trusting her to ride alone quite yet.
Penny hated to admit it but was reasonably terrified of horses. She didn't want to let on to Ben about her fears so was glad that she could take a back seat as Kate kitted Ben out with a helmet and Henry tightened the girth on the cute spotted Appaloosa called Bingo. Penny leaned on the fence listening to Henry clearly explain what the equipment was called and why they needed it. Ben was listening quietly and nervously, glancing over to his mum as she nodded and smiled back at him.
When he was ready Henry helped Ben onto Bingo's back as Penny kept hold of the reigns.
"Do you know why you mount a horse from its left side buddy? Henry asked
Ben pondered before replying "It is something to do with soldier's swords Henry?"
Henry beamed proudly at the boys' knowledge "Yes Bud, that's right. Swords are traditionally worn on the left so you don't risk catching your horse as you mount. Ok, so keep your back straight and strong, here are your reigns, I'll keep these, and we will walk you around to start with."
Ben chuckled as Bingo noisily puffed at Henry as they walked to join the others.
Kate relinquished her duties, confident in Henry's supervision. She joined Penny, leaning back against the fence.
"Fuck me Pen, if he said the word 'mount' one more time I was going to lose it"
Penny snorted and covered her mouth as Henry looked back at them and waved innocently.
After no time at all Ben was riding by himself, making the chubby little pony trot carefully around the paddock. Henry kept close to him, giving him tips. He was in his element.
When the time was up Henry and Ben led Bingo back down to Penny. Kate was back in the stable with Boris.
"Mummy?"
"No, we are not getting a pony, if that's was you were going to ask me!" she said softly but sternly
"But why? Henry says I'm really good" Henry nodded at him in agreement.
"No pony honey - ok?" Penny stuck to her word "But - I'll speak to Noah's mum about lessons alright? Deal?"
Ben did a little celebration dance before Bingo nudged him affectionately.
Tom and Lewis helped Henry with getting the horses back in their stables and released from their saddles as Kate proudly walked out with Boris. He was a glossy chestnut brown with white feet and a stripe of white along his nose. He looked so regal compared to the other horses, and so much bigger too. Penny stepped away from the fence as Kate brought him closer.
"Hey, Boris" She said, showing no inclination to fuss him. Kate swung herself up onto him as they quickly galloped up the slight slope of the paddock, leaving Penny alone with her thoughts.
Henry had crept up behind her and grabbed her hips as she yelped loudly.
"Shh, don't spook the horses Pen!"
"Well don't spook me then Mr. Cavill!"
Again Henry's hands moved towards her stomach.
"Henry.." Penny warned.
"I'm sorry, I can't help myself - I can't stop thinking about it." he kissed her neck, still gently holding her belly.
"Well try, because it's only going to end in tears when I'm not ok? Plus have you even thought about whether I would want another baby Henry?!" Penny instantly regretted being so blunt.
Henry stood up straight and turned her around.
"What? You'd - get rid of it Pen?" his face was horrified at the thought.
"Of course not, I didn't say that Henry. If it's happened then it will be a blessing, as all children are. I just don't know if we are on the same page about this, Christ, we've only known each other for jus over three weeks honey!"
His face softened and he looked down at his feet. "I know, I'm getting carried away, I'm sorry Pen. I don't want to frighten you off." He pursed his lips together, still looking at the ground.
Penny lifted his chin up to make him look at her. "Has this happened before Hen?"
His body language told her that it had.
"Kind of - nowhere near as quickly." He looked like he was going to leave it at that, but Penny's silence led him to continue "With my last girlfriend. We were both keen to try, or so I thought. We planned a future together, our wedding, our kid's names, the whole shebang. She was the instigator in most of it, believe it or not Pen! But then I found out that she was still on the pill and the real truth came out after that. It was a fucking sham Penny, I felt like a complete fool."
"Oh Henry, I'm so sorry."
"We stayed together for a couple more months after. I thought we could try again, and, I thought I loved her. Plus it was complicated too with joint business interests. But I just couldn't trust her anymore. She wasn't ready to settle down, so we called it quits. I know you're going to analyse me now and think I'm having some kind of knee-jerk reaction Pen, but the fact of the matter is all the bad relationships I've had in the past, all of the mistakes that I've made, all of the situations that I've allowed myself to be led into have finally made me realise what I do actually want out of a relationship. I just didn't ever think it could happen to me. And then the hands of fate crossed our paths and you rescued me, in every way possible Pen."
Penny sunk into his embrace as Henry breathed in deeply and closed his eyes. Absorbing her touch, her warmth, her love. Trying to melt her fears and anxieties with this touch, worried he'd said too much or had been too honest.
"I'd be lying Henry if I didn't admit to being totally freaked out at the moment. Since we met it's like my life is traveling at a thousand miles an hour. I guess that's almost normal for you Hen, but it's been a lot to process. I live on my nerves and at the moment, my anxiety is getting the better of me."
Henry resisted the temptation to panic at her solemn words.
"Look, what I'm trying to say - badly, is that if I am pregnant we would make it work, but that's not how it should be. I'm old fashioned Hen. Babies should come about from a long-term committed relationship, not a drunken night of passion between two strangers."
Henry looked hurt at that comment.
"Shit, this is coming out all wrong." Penny took a deep breath and tried again, "I care about you so much already you big stupid dork. But I don't feel ready to try for a baby with you just yet. I just want us to find our feet as a couple and see if we can make this more long term - rather than having to deal with morning sickness and hormones and backache when we should be carefree and relaxed. And say if we are still together in 6 months, maybe then we can think about it? Until then, we should be more careful."
"I know you're right Pen, but what if you are already? Would you be unhappy?" His bright blue eyes bored into her, searching for her true feelings.
Penny pulled him towards her, she breathed in the flowery scent of his washing powder gripping at the back of his jeans, poking her fingers under his leather belt. Her ear was against his chest, his heart beat loud and strong.
"Of course not sweetheart. I would be proud to carry your child Henry, you would make an amazing father."
Henry squeezed her even closer. "That's the thing Pen, I already know you are the most amazing mother. Ben is such a special little guy - and that's all down to you Pen. You are THE most amazing woman that I have ever met, you are clever, funny, kind, talented, loving, passionate, honest, quirky, unbelievably sexy, great in bed, and breathtakingly beautiful.
"Wowsers, Henry, I think you forgot something there."
"Take the compliment Pen. That's why I love you and I want to be with you."
"I will never tire of hearing you say that Henry. You're amazing. My ego can't take all of this. Maybe I'm in a coma after the accident on the hill and this is all some epic dream scene. I'll just walk out the shower back into my old life."
Luckily Henry got the reference and chuckled. He was sad that Penny wasn't as excited about the possibility of having a baby together, but completely understood her point of view. In fact, he was pretty sure EVERYONE he knew would say the same. Maybe he was affected more by his last breakup than he realised? But what he knew for absolute sure is that Penny was THE ONE. He just needed to convince her of that fact.
Kate trotted back over to Penny and Henry, curious why they looked so solemn. "Hey, Henry, fancy trying out Bozza?"
"Really? Yeah, I'd love to!"
"Jump over then big boy."
Henry leaped effortlessly over the wooden rail as everyone came out of the tack room to watch him. He walked alongside Boris adjusting the stirrups then gently stroking his mane.
"We gonna get along fella?" he asked. Seemingly being happy with Boris's response he then hoisted himself up, throwing his leg over.
"These jeans aren't ideal for horse riding" he winced. Patting Boris firmly, he casually set off at a confident canter.
Kate pretended to swoon at the sight of Henry on her gelding. Penny too admired his ability and posture. Surprised at how turned on she was at watching him ride. He looked so comfortable on horseback, so impressive. His thick thighs and huge shoulders controlling the powerful animal was entrancing. The children seemed equally enraptured by the sight too. Ben sidled up to Penny.
"Wow, Henry is so cool," he said
"He certainly is honey" Penny sighed, her heart aching watching him slowly trot back towards the group, his eyes fixed on hers.
"Stop flirting with my horse Cavill and let's get some coffee, I'm freezing my tits off out here" Kate added.
Henry popped back to the cottage to change his top as the others all went back to the house.
Before going into the back doors Kate stopped Penny and waited until they were alone.
"Everything ok Pen Pen?" She asked, trying to hold eye contact with her.
"Yeah, of course. It's been so lovely spending time with you guys Katie, I missed this place."
"Cut the bullshit Penny, I can tell when something is up - everything ok with you and Mr. Muscle?"
Penny chuckled at Kate's name for him. "Yeah, it's good, in fact, it's great. He told me he loved me this morning!"
Kate squealed and wrapped her arms around her.
"I love him too, Katie" Penny couldn't control the huge smile on her face.
Kate jumped up and down clapping "Oh My God, you guys can get married!! You'll be in Hello magazine!! I can meet David Beckham - and Tom Cruise!!! Fuck!!"
"Calm down Kate, you're as bad as Henry!"
"What do you mean? Has he asked you to marry him?!!" Kate started fanning herself as she tried to stop herself from crying.
"No! Don't be ridiculous!" Penny tried to backpedal. "He's just - very enthusiastic, and I'm a bit more cautious - that's all".
Kate raised an eyebrow at her friend "In what way Pen?"
"Nothing in particular." Penny lied, I'm just not sure if I will cope if it all goes public - can you imagine what the press and his fans would think about me?!
"What the fuck does that mean Pen? How could they not love you?"
"Look, I can't cope with this conversation at the moment Katie," Penny confessed.
"Ok honey" she said, always knowing how far to push things "But don't bottle things up, babe. You know that's never a good idea. Hey - how about you guys stay a bit longer - Ben can skive off school for a couple of days and we can talk properly. I miss you so much Pen."
Penny looked up to the grey-blue sky, trying to prevent the tears from overflowing her eyes.
"I'm tempted Katie, but I've got so much on with work, I just can't drop the ball at the moment. I'll be ok, aren't I always? Actually - don't answer that"
"Too right - I know you better than you know yourself Penny Green. Plus I don't like you being alone on the anniversary."
Penny smiled at how her friend always remembered every important date. Every year fewer people remembered. Every year she was another 12 months away from his last breath. The loss you feel when you lose someone that dear to you just doesn't go away - time doesn't heal. Life just layers on top of those feelings. Having Kate's party had been a welcome distraction from the self pity she normally finds herself in this time of year. Last year was particularly bad. Penny's mood back then was very dark, so dark that her thoughts scared her. She'd sought counseling after that, promising herself that she'd never put Ben through that again.
"I'll be fine honey. I'm stronger now, ok?"
Kate knew that her friend was strong, but she also knew how stubborn she was in accepting help.
"Does Henry know Pen?
"Know what, about the anniversary, or me being an emotional wreck?"
"Both" Kate answered, sticking her tongue out.
"Well I think he already knows I'm a nut job, but I've not told him about Tuesday"
"Well maybe you should Pen, then there's another person to keep their beady eye on you!"
Kate pulled Penny into her side and walked them both into the french doors to the kitchen.
Henry was already back, now wearing a fine knit, pale grey jumper that clung beautifully to his biceps and chest. Penny felt a rush of excitement seeing him leaning casually, drinking a coffee, and chatting. He turned to smile at her and Kate as they approached.
"Ladies, where have you two been hiding?" he asked, stealing Penny from Kate's grip casually.
Henry placed his coffee down as he pulled Penny towards him and turned her around as his arm hugged across her breastbone. His other hand poked into the front pocket of her jeans. He breathed in her scent again, remembering how much he missed that whilst he was away. Storing up the memory again to tide him over for the next few days. Penny closed her eyes and kissed his forearm tenderly.
"You guys are so cute Pen" Kate winked as she handed Penny her creamy coffee.
"How long have you been together Penny?" Emma asked shyly.
Henry smiled, letting Penny explain "Well, we've only known each other about a month, it's still early days. He's not had time to get bored of me yet."
"Shush woman, I think you'll find I'm the boring one," Henry added.
"My parents, God rest their souls" Rene began, "Were married after two weeks of courting, and were together over seventy years, happily married for every one of those might I add!"
"Things were different back in the stone age Rene" Tom shouted at his mother-in-law.
"Yeah I don't think we're quite there yet Rene" Penny added as Rene pretended to strangle Tom.
"Well, I've always been a romantic at heart myself" Henry piped up as he dropped to one knee in front of Penny.
"Fuck off!" Kate shouted before covering her own mouth.
Penny felt the blood drain from her face until she saw Henry deliberately messing about with the laces on his boot.
"Henry, you absolute fucker!" Penny pretended to kick him as he got up and kissed her passionately whilst still laughing.
"Sorry Pen, the look on your face!"
"Hilarious!" Penny scowled, feeling much less panicked. "On that note, I'm going to pack my bags, Henry, you can stay here!"
"Hmm, ok. Don't bring them over though - I'll grab them all when we leave ok?! Ok?!"
"Okie dokes" she said as she walked out into the hallway.
"Think you're in trouble again mate!" Tom teased.
"Too far?" Henry asked as they all chuckled with him.
-
Penny wasn't annoyed with him, in fact, she enjoyed seeing him so playful in front of her friends. She just needed some time alone, and away from any more relationship questions.
Back in the Pig Sty she quickly packed her things away and made sure everything was clean and tidy. She went back to sit in the armchair, the mountains were now clearly visible in the afternoon light. She felt guilty for wanting to get away from Henry knowing that she'd be dropping him off soon but she'd felt her anxiety rising and really didn't want to have a panic attack in front of everyone. She started on her breathing techniques, relaxing into the chair and closing her eyes. Slowly she felt her heart rate slow and her shoulders relax.
"Chill Penny" she said out loud to herself.
-
Back in the house, Rene went upstairs to help Ben gather his belongings whilst Kate decided she needed to have a chat with Henry.
"Henry, can we talk, privately?" she asked, as everyone started to leave the dining room. "No it's ok - we'll go outside"
Henry wondered if he was still in trouble.
Kate motioned for him to sit next to her on the outdoor sofa. Henry felt like a naughty schoolboy in the Headmistresses office.
"Yes Miss?" he smirked, trying to break the ice.
Kate was now in Barrister mode and immune to his charms.
"Look, Henry. I'm going to be honest with you"
"Shit, ok, go on" he added, wondering what in the world she was going to say to him.
"Penny is one of the most important people in the world to me and as much as I desperately want to see her happy again I'm terrified of her getting hurt."
"Kate, listen - I "
Kate raised her finger in the air and Henry stopped speaking.
"I can see how nuts you both are about each other, but there's no getting away from the fact that you are a celebrity and I'm really worried how Penny will cope if you go public with your relationship."
Henry tried to speak again, but Kate's finger rose again.
"Penny might seem like a strong, independent woman, and Christ knows she's been to hell and back the past few years, but her heart is so fragile still. I'm worried she won't cope. I don't know how much she's told you, and if she hasn't then she's probably going to throttle me, but she has had some very low episodes brought on by stressful events or anniversaries usually."
"How low do you mean Kate?"
"Pretty low Henry"
"Has she tried to kill herself?"
"No, but she has spoken about it a few times and it's fucking terrifying. I feel so far away from her here." Kate straightened her back and breathed in sharply through her nose - trying to regain her composure.
Henry closed his eyes, his own heart aching for Penny.
"I would do anything to keep her safe Kate. I fucking adore her." Henry swallowed hard.
"I can see that you do Henry, but is that enough?"
"What do you mean, are you saying we should break up?
"No, I'm not. But just please, please be careful. When I spoke to Penny earlier I could sense her anxiety and although she didn't tell me anything specific she hinted that you were very enthusiastic. Now I don't know what that means, and I'm not expecting you to tell me but please just be aware that it's a difficult time of the year for Pen, it's the anniversary of losing Ant on Tuesday and it's always the hardest time for her. Last year she didn't cope at all."
Henry sat silently considering her words.
"Look, Henry. You'd be more than welcome to tell me to fuck off out of your business, but I know that you love her too. I'm just giving you a heads up to keep an eye out for her ok?"
Kate seemed exasperated and got up to leave. Henry grabbed her elbow.
"Wait, sit, please"
"Thank you, Kate. I really do appreciate you telling me all of this. Penny has spoken to me about her anxiety already, but I didn't realise how bad it had been. If she'll accept my help I know an amazing guy that has helped lots of people with similar issues.
Penny's right in saying I'm very enthusiastic. In fact, I've behaved like a lovesick teenager ever since we met. I'm head over heels in love with her Kate. And I seem completely unable to play it cool with her. I realise this sounds ridiculous, considering how long we've known each other, but I just think she's amazing." Henry blushed at his honesty.
"She is amazing Henry, and I think you guys are great together. I just wish you were an ordinary guy so you could have a normal relationship without paps in bushes, crazy internet trolls and a collection of stalkers."
"That makes two of us Kate.
They both stood up and hugged. Kate couldn't resist a final squeeze on each of Henry's biceps before nodding in approval and heading back into the house. Henry decided to check on Penny.
-
"Penny? Pen? You ok?" he asked before spotting her asleep on the armchair.
He sat beside her, watching her, adoring her.
After several minutes had passed he knew he had to rouse her.
"Hey. Sleepyhead" he whispered, as he moved to sit on the arm of her chair.
"Shit!" she said blinking rapidly "What time is it?"
"It's almost time to go, sorry to wake you up. You looked so peaceful, dribbling" he smiled.
Penny checked to see if he was joking, thankfully he was.
"Oh, right, we'd better load the car and say our goodbyes"
"Yes, but first" Henry leaned down and kissed her deeply as Penny draped her arms behind his neck. He pulled her out of the chair whilst still kissing her neck and chest. "Just wanted to steal a few extra kisses to keep me going whilst I'm away again."
"Mmmm, you can steal away Mr. Cavill..." Penny moaned as he nibbled her neck and her earlobe.
Henry then engulfed Penny with his biggest bear hug.
"I love you Penny Green. Do you know that?"
"I kind of got that impression Hen."
"Is everything ok Pen? Did I upset you with the knee thing?"
"No, of course not, it was quite funny actually. No. I just needed a bit of headspace."
"How are you feeling now?"
"I'm ok - I guess I just needed a cat nap"
Henry kissed her on her forehead, before grabbing the bags from by the front door.
"Bye-bye, little sty" Penny added as they walked back up towards the car.
It was an emotional farewell, both Penny and Kate were in floods of tears. Tom and Henry hugged fiercely, Henry had grown really fond of the big Welshman.
"Look after my girl Cavill" Kate shouted as Henry climbed into the driver's seat.
"As if my life depended on it Mrs. Roberts" Henry shouted, beeping the horn as he drove back down the lane.
--
"How's it feel to be back behind the wheel Henry?" Penny asked.
"Good, it's a nice car to drive, and I love it even more as it's the reason that we met." Henry reached over and placed his large, warm hand over Penny's knee. She missed being a passenger, being able to admire the scenery and having fewer responsibilities. Henry was a very confident driver so she felt like she could truly relax.
"You can have another cat nap if you're tired Pen?"
"Oh, no, sorry Henry. I'm ok. I don't want to be rude."
"Nonsense woman. You've got a long drive ahead of you, I'll wake you up in half an hour"
Penny didn't want to be asleep during the last few moments of their unexpected time together, but her eyes felt so heavy, and it felt so nice to close them, just for one second.
Henry glanced over to see that she had drifted off again. Checking the rear view mirror he saw Ben asleep too. His mouth open wide, catching flies. He worried that she would be too tired to drive home, and made a note to get her a coffee before he went. He mused over his chat with Kate earlier. Wondering how their relationship could possibly damage Penny's mental health. She wouldn't be the first girlfriend to have struggled with all of the additional elements involved in being Henry's girlfriend. He was so used to the press and the over zealous fans now that he forgot how overwhelming it could be, especially to someone who had never been in the limelight. He didn't want to have another secret relationship, but if that was required to keep Penny happy then he would do everything he could to keep it that way. But if they were having a baby, he had no idea how they could keep that a secret.
Thinking of the possibility of becoming a father made Henry feel electrified. Like he could achieve anything, but at the same time ultra protective over Penny and terrified of something bad happening.
He told himself off again for getting carried away. He would have to wait until tonight to find out. The wait was killing him, but he also didn't want to pass any of this onto Penny.
Just outside the airport Henry pulled into a drive-through Starbucks and ordered drinks for all three of them. He pulled over into a parking space and gently nudged Penny's shoulder.
"Pen, I got you a coffee"
"Hmm? Oh, thank you. Where are we?"
The sound of a large jet engine overhead answered her question.
"Oh, we're at the airport already? Henry, why didn't you wake me up sooner?"
"You were sparko, sorry. Plus I worry about you driving so far if you're that tired. I got you an extra shot, so you'll be buzzing hopefully."
"I wasted our time together Hen, I'm so sorry."
"Zip it. I had a fabulous time Pen, the party, your friends, this morning, the horses - everything was amazing" Henry beamed.
"Yeah, it was pretty special," Penny added as she grabbed both sides of his large hand. Her bottom lip quivered as she thought of being without him again.
"Hey, don't. You'll start me off again Mrs. Green." He said, kissing the inside of her wrist.
Ben chose this moment to wake up.
"Are we home Mummy?" he asked, sleepily.
"No, not yet cherub, we're at the airport to drop Henry off."
"I got you an orange juice Bud, and a cookie" Henry passed the treats back to the boy.
"Nom, thanks Henry!"
After their coffee break, Henry drove to the drop-off area, reluctant to go again. He pulled on a baseball cap and some sunglasses before jumping out of the Beast. Penny helped Ben move into her seat, along with his snacks and bag of toys.
Henry poked his head in the car and jiggled Ben's seatbelt to check before whispering in his ear.
"You look after your Mum ok Ben, I'll be back in a few days and we can do lots of fun things together ok? Love you, buddy"
"Love you too Henry" Ben said, unaware of how Henry's heart swelled at those words.
Henry hugged him and ruffled his hair, gently shutting the large door. He leaned against the door lifting his glasses to wipe his eyes.
"Shit, I'm at it again." he sniffed
Penny embraced him, crying herself.
"Wow, we both suck at goodbyes Henry" she laughed, tears still running down her rosy cheeks.
"Officially the worst" Henry agreed.
Penny was anxious to send him off in case anyone recognised him, but she selfishly wanted to stop him again.
"Just a few days, this time Pen, ok? Then we'll have a chunk of time together. Text me when you get home and call me later tonight alright?" Henry made sure he had eye contact with her for the last part.
Penny knew what he wanted. She was absolutely dreading it.

I hope the warnings didn't put you off! This was a tricky chapter to write, Penny needed to put the brakes on things at the risk of upsetting Henry. She's struggling to cope with everything that is happening to her, and the possibility of another baby on the horizon has terrified her.
