There was a really sweet moment with him and I totally forgot what it was. AH when he inspires his teammate not to quit by working super hard.

Sometimes I like villains, and sometimes they just make everything difficult and unhappy for too many characters I like in too lasting a way. As soon as he started doing this, I hated him.

now that i think about it, you truly used to hate huey a lot before, since i remember you saying that wasn't interested in 1700s because he was the focus

I knowwww and I feel so dumb because he’s my second favorite now. :(

The problem was that I had seen one too many Tragic Villain/Antihero BackstoriesTM  where a terrible, unlikable character suddenly has some sob story that’s supposed to make me go “Ohhhh, so his life was SAD now I have to feel SAD and that somehow makes me like this character now.” I had developed a kind of allergic reaction to backstories for characters I didn’t already like in some capacity. (For example, I think Melvi is a really charismatic villain, so I DO want to know more about him.) But if I can’t find something to enjoy about your character, and you hit me with “He used to be a perfectly standard Good Person/ChildTM and then some great big trauma happened and now he’s a jerk,” it feels lazy and manipulative, and it pisses me off.

Basically, I thought Huey was the same thing. I didn’t find him terribly interesting (with the exception of that one scene with him and Firo in 1934 that I’ve talked about before), and I didn’t care much for him as a villain, so I thought that the 1700s was an attempt to manipulate me into liking him by making me sad. 

And it kind of was, but the difference was that instead of focusing on the trauma that made Huey what he was, the story focused on who Huey was: his personality, how he relates to his past, to himself, to people around him. Instead of making me feel sorry for him, the story made me connect with him. And then when I reread things like the epilogue to 1933, I can see traces of this character I knew and loved. And Narita doesn’t sugarcoat 1930s Huey—just look at Chane, Liza, all of the Lamia—which makes the whole experience so complicated. It’s like watching a family member self-destruct, and you want to beat some sense into them but also hug them. I don’t know.

Why I like them

He's smoking hot and damn he's smoking hot. I love his introduction, first of all. I got really attached to his relationship with Kagami when they were kids. Also, he's the first character I think of when asked to think of a character from KNB who's plain cool. Smart, cool-headed, with a side of sneakiness and a hidden playful side. He's a fun one.

Why I don’t

His pride is frustrating, especially due to what it did to his relationship with Kagami in America. Like, he could have explained why he was upset but nahhhh, let's just leave this conflict in the air for a long while instead.

Can't say yet because I'm super behind and I have a feeling the best has yet to come.

Hahaha, he only shows up in season two so far.
