Linaria supina - subsp. maritima (Lesser Butter-and-eggs)
Breaking News...
Yesterday I went for a walk down by the beach and I found this little wildflower. Originally, I thought it was Yellow toadflax (Linaria vulgaris), Also known as Common toadflax (or Butter-and-eggs), this species spreads by a creeping root system. It is native to Europe and typically found in cultivated fields, pastures, along roadsides and other disturbed areas. Originally introduced as a garden flower in the 1800′s, Common toadflax is now considered ‘invasive’ throughout Canada, the US and Mexico. Yellow toadflax can out-compete native plants, which negatively affects plant crops, and reduces grass growing in pastures and rangelands.
However, something was wrong. Yellow toadflax (Linaria vulgaris) sends up a familiar flower stalk about 30 cm tall (two and a half feet) but this plant was much shorter and hugged the ground.
A little research turned up a separate species, Lingaria supina native to the northern Spanish coast. After showing up a few years ago in New York, this species is now found in five American states including Oregon and California. I believe that this is the first time that Lesser Butter-and-eggs has been spotted in Canada. I reported it to the Invasive Species Council of British Columbia and I’m eagerly awaiting a reply. If it does turn out to be a new invasive species, remember you heard about it on Flowerishness first!
Loving how this one turned out. Miss the #fireweed already! This one available now: https://etsy.me/3E6wCzq. ___________________________________#landscape #watercolor #wildfowers #mountain #alaska (at Soldotna, Alaska) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVbTnGIPmd-/?utm_medium=tumblr
