As soon as someone met your gaze you knew you were in trouble. I think everything changed with the advent of the dreaded mobile phone, and of course it's impossible to spot a single person in any crowd who is NOT hypnotised by their own phone. You see people airily walking into four lanes of oncoming traffic as they dial some oh-so-terribly important number. Wherever you go you are forced to listen to someone else's conversation, which is why I'd rather kill myself than travel by train.
