#black moon #horror film #pre code #1934 #american cinema #roy william neill #clements ripley #wells root #jack holt #fay wray #dorothy burgess #cora sue collins #arnold korff #clarence muse #lumsden hare #madame sul-te-wan #eleanor wesselhoeft #laurence criner #william r. dunn #louis silvers #so one big (massive) caveat before i say anything else about this film‚ one huge content warning i have to get out the way: this is...#pretty fucking racist. it informs every aspect of the film‚ plot‚ script‚ casting‚ even the title. if it weren't for the pervasive racism #then this would be pretty interesting as a pre code colonial nightmare‚ with specially tinted scenes for extra shocks (the first‚ a fiery #orange as an old lady meets her death in lava‚ is genuinely startling). but that racism is just.. yeah. stolid Jack Holt tries to square #chin his way to heroism but the overall thrust (of insidious Black culture encroaching on good god fearing white landowners) is just too #repellent to get past. there is some merit to seeing so many actual Black actors in such an early film (the majority uncredited) but their #work was thankless; even Clarence Muse‚ who gets to play more 'civilised' than the natives‚ is still in a servile semi comic role that #relies on stereotypes and bigotry. of interest as historical document and for its flashes of original style but a very big red flag too #so yknow. watch at your own risk.
