Wilfrid Owen's poetry is powerful, rhythmic stuff. It's not gloomy so much as redhot despair. I recently watched Peter Jackson's #theyshallnotgrowold , which was beautifully done. Despite the graphic nature of the subject (all of it is restored WWI footage), the strange thing was often it was said by veterans that they enjoyed the life of the army and trudging. The strangest aspect was hearing that on return, society really had no interest in what happened to them.
