A photo essay by Tara Israel.
Part 2 of 2 in the High Summer issue of Edible East End. These photos were actually how the story of bayman Will Bennett came to be. I am starting the process of publishing a book on (a)Bonac, my photo work about my hometown, East Hampton, that I have been shooting since 2010. While going through my negatives of local fishermen you all have seen here, I realized that I unintentionally captured a really magical story within my own story. Will is the nephew of the two brothers I have spent many a morning on the water with and has been fishing with his family since he was a child. The oldest photos capture him at 8 years old going with his mom to work when he wasn’t in school. The most recent photos were taken on the eve of his 13th birthday, a confident fisherman who is able to purchase his own gear with his earnings and has earned the respect of the other men working in the bay. This is why I take my time to work on projects- the story you end up with is always better than the one you started with. It did involve me texting with a tween that I am not related to, but I have the screenshot from him that said his mom was ok with us hanging out. I’m really proud of this work. I’m grateful for where it has taken me and even more excited for where I plan to take it.
The end of the line for a fishing family is not going quietly.
Part 1 of 2 of my recent work in Edible East End. Take a boat ride with my favorite teen as he checks on eel pots set in the bay we were both raised on.
Sometimes, I think we waste our words and we waste our moments, and we don't take the time to say the things that are in our hearts when we have the chance.
