So I have a mythological-esk series called “A World Bigger Than Your Own” where I make up a lot of creatures and mythology as I go. That being said, I still create a good amount of lore for said creatures as I do so I kinda wanted to share some of it!
Just going to give some information on Benrey’s for now, the rest will come later.
Benrey’s Species:
This race of immortal beings have many names that have been gathered over the years. The two main ones that stuck were The Guardians and The Gatekeepers. Other names include Those Who Walk Between Worlds, The Watchers, and a much more informal nickname, Hoppers.
The Origin of this race was said to come from the Deities. That they were initially created to act on the Deities’ behalf and work to better the world as they know it. However, the race has been around for so long that whether or not this legend is true is up for debate.
As stated in their name, their role is to protect and guard others from causing mass destruction and essentially prevent the decay of the planet. This can come in many forms- some Gatekeepers are tasked with stopping people from destroying the planet environmentally, some are meant to guard a specific creature or being that has been imprisioned to stop them from potentially wrecking the planet, and the most common job is to guard a specific area and prevent great catastrophic change from happening.
For Benrey, he applies to the very latter and especially specializes in dealing with the ‘False Security’ as he calls it. It’s Benrey’s job that all the beings in Gordon’s area stay safe and don’t get dragged into another dimension.
Looks tend to vary depending on their region. I.E. While Benrey is deathly pale given he spends a lot of time in a thick forest and doesn’t see the sun too often, a Gatekeeper from a sunnier place would have darker skin. It’s also possible for Gatekeepers to have unnatural colored skin, especially different shades of gray. This usually happens with Gatekeepers who spend a lot of time jumping between different realities and thus, are exposed to different types and intensities of light. However, despite several differences, most Gatekeepers have a few common threads in terms of looks: All have some variation of sharp teeth, claws, and long limbs used to defend themselves and others. All also tend to be very cold to touch.
As for the powers, Gatekeepers are mostly known for two main abilities. The first being Immortality, which isn’t unheard of but still very rare in most mythological beings. Gatekeepers have dim but sustaining life force, which while ever lasting, isn’t particularly tasty to those who feed on life force. Not to mention, this dim life force is also a big reason to why they’re cold to touch. The other power that often defines them is their ability to Reality Jump. Gatekeepers, unlike almost every other being, have the ability to jump between all realities with ease. All realities exist on Earth but they’re all vastly different from each other. Gatekeepers protect all of these realities but are usually assigned to one reality and meant to stick there, with exceptions. This power can easily be mistaken for teleporting as it can be used to travel great distances.
As (very briefly) mentioned by Benrey, there is a limited number of Gatekeepers in the world as they cannot physically reproduce. Gatekeepers aren’t born naturally but instead are created in the world out of pure energy with an instinct of what they need to do and find themselves along the way. Sometimes another Gatekeeper will guide them but largely, they ‘Grow up’ on their own. There are only as many Gatekeepers as there needs to be- if the world physically needs another, another will be made. This being said, some Gatekeepers have been around since the dawn of humanity while others have only stuck around a few centuries.
Gatekeepers choose their own names. They tend to pick one for their own species and one from whatever culture they protect. The biggest reason for this being that Gatekeeper language is more transferring emotions and information through a sort-of song and it’s physically impossible for most other species to communicate in the same way. So while Benrey chose the name ‘Benrey’ so that people like Gordon could pronounce it, Benrey’s name in his own language would be more of a low pitched noise while also emitting emotions of calming thoughts and curiosity.
Gatekeepers don’t typically have close relationships of any kind with one another like most other species, as they need to stay in their area to protect it. That being said, Gatekeepers do tend to befriend beings of other species in their area, sometimes even entering romantic relationships, as they still have the need for connection like every other species.
Gatekeepers in areas close to each other form groups that can aid each other if need be and regularly meet up to ensure that all is running smoothly. These groups are commonly called Councils and almost every Gatekeeper is in one, with very few exceptions.
Finally, Benrey is a bit of an oddity for his people. He tends to indulge in human society, finding it funny and interesting, and takes on a variety of slang in his regular speech. While this by itself isn’t entirely uncommon as many Gatekeepers enjoy the cultures they protect, Benrey also has a history of taking on a role of Local Cryptid and scares a few people around town for fun. Though nothing too big, just ominously standing in the woods staring at someone before walking away. Because of this, Benrey has earned the nickname ‘Boogie-Man’ that is largely unique to him alone in Gatekeeper kind. Though blurry and hard to make out, Benrey has been caught on video and the town has become a bit more tourist attraction-y because of it.
And that’s some of the information on Gatekeepers! Just a bit of a ramble by yours truly, hope you enjoy!
