A Girl Reading (c.1906). William Chadwick (America, 1879-1962). Oil on canvas. Delaware Art Museum.
The subject of this painting is Pauline Bancroft Chadwick, the artist's wife. Her father was John Bancroft, who became president of Joseph Bancroft and Sons after the death in 1915 of his cousin, Samuel Bancroft, the Wilmington industrialist whose Pre-Raphaelite collection is now owned by the Museum. Pauline was also related to Howard Pyle, who gave her a painting, now in the Museum's collection, as a wedding gift.
Untitled (William Chadwick, Unknown date)
William Chadwick was a late 19th/20th century British artist who ultimately studied and practiced in the United States for most of his life. While many of Chadwick’s most iconic pieces are paintings that display “a light, sunny color palette and showcase genre scenes of city and country life,” he also demonstrated range as an artist. This is exemplified by the sketch above which has a much more realistic and somber tone than his paintings.

Melodies (c.1905). William Chadwick (American, 1879-1962). Oil on panel. Florence Griswold Museum.
Music was an important part of the Lyme Art Colony. Miss Florence played the piano, artists Harry Hoffman the flute or banjo, and Lewis Cohen the mandolin. Henry Ward Ranger was an accomplished organist. He had his organ shipped to Old Lyme to add to these evening concerts. Unfortunately, Miss Florence’s English harp had been damaged and was not playable during the years of the art colony.
The Hammock (1910). William Chadwick (American, 1879-1963). Oil on canvas. Lyman Allyn Art Museum.
Chadwick studied at the Art Students League before he settled permanently in Old Lyme where he became a leading member of the Lyme Art Association. While he studied under John Twachtmann in his student days, his style most reflects that of his close friend Childe Hassam.
