Alexandra Daddario stars as a struggling expat living in Tokyo who tries to escape herself by having a string of drunkenly submissive one-night stands with random men while staying at different Japanese hourly hotels designed for casual encounters or discrete hook-ups.
Based on her 2007 novel of the same name, Catherine Hanrahan adapts her own work for the screen to mixed results as Daddario’s Margaret struggles to navigate trauma and romance beyond sex while living in a foreign culture. Her all-American nature provides a proper contrast to the exotic setting while also enhancing the closed off, emotionless demeanour of the character’s conflicted feelings.
