Not today, but in the 70s and 80s I think the closest thing to a universally disliked figure in the space exploration fandom was Senator William Proxmire, who was known for opposing space spending and almost cancelled SETI.
Oh interesting! This is the first time I’m hearing about him – I can see why many fans of space exploration (and scientific research as a whole!) disliked him so much!
