Day Six
Today I spent most of the afternoon and evening in the practice room at school. I got much further into 'Campanas Del Alba', my tremolo has never felt better and I'm really starting to get a grasp on the melodies and harmonic progressions of the piece.
I also received a pdf of five sketches (short character pieces) written by Canadian guitarist and composer William Beauveis from Toronto. He was here for the annual guitar festival held in Calgary, and I had the chance to connect and spend some time with him since I took a class with him the year before. We had some wonderful conversations and even though I didn't get to play for him this year his advice was inspiring. He dedicated two of the sketches to me, and two to a close friend of mine who is also a guitarist here in Calgary. Last year I played a set of Brouwer studies for him and the pointers he gave me on playing the studies really brought them to life over the past year as I've played them. It came as no surprise that there is clearly a Brouwer-influence on the sketches, and they are written in a style that I find very compelling and beautiful. I played through them today and I can't be more thrilled with the writing and texture. I am really looking forward to learning and performing the sketches.
