After we recently posted about the fact that grandmaster William Lombardy, the man who coached Bobby Fischer has been homeless and living in the streets and subway stations of New York, our great friend Anna contacted her friend Father Fidelis of the Franciscan Order and together they visited Chess Forum the night before last and offered to help. Father Fidelis offered to find home for Mr. Lombardy effective immediately. And sure enough on Saturday when GM came to the store to rest we conveyed the message of Father Fidelis to him and right away called him the good father who even upon such short notice was able to secure a room for Mr. Lombardy at St. Anthony Shelter For Renewal in the Bronx. This was really a miracle. Thanks to Father Fidelis, the Franciscan friars and the generosity of St. Anthony Shelter For Renewal, GM William Lombardy now has a roof over his head and a place to call home. Mr. Lombardy called this news," A miracle on 156th. Street." Which is where the shelter is located in the Bronx. Truly, this was a happy day in which so many people, Anna, Father Fidelis, Phil, Mark and many others contributed each in their own way to find a home for such a great man and one of the legends of chess in the US and the world at large. To all who helped and especially to St. Anthony Shelter and to Father Fidelis who proved that when the will is there no obstacle cannot be surmounted and to Anna who started the ball rolling, there aren't enough words to express gratitude for what they did. So a simple "Thank You!" might be the best way to express how we all feel about their great work in this holiday season and this season of helping and giving.
