Willie O'Ree Canadian Ice Hockey player who played for the Boston Bruins, making his debut on January 18, 1958, 63 years ago today. Was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame in 2018. Inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in the Builder category May, 2020. Inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. On Feb 18, 2021, his #22 jersey will officially be retired before the Bruins-Devils game. He was also the first Black ice hockey player. He played a total of 45 games with the Boston Bruins, garnering a career record of 4 goals & 10 assists. He played most of his minor league career with the Western Hockey League, gaining 2 scoring titles in the 1964-65 & 1968-69 seasons, with records of more than 30 goals, 4 or more times, with a high of 38. He also played 50 games with the American Hockey Lesgue, with the Los Angeles Blades & San Diego Gulls. The Gulls retired his jersey to the rafters of now Pechanga Arena. He continued to play in the minor ice hockey leagues until the age of 43. After Willie O'Ree's NHL stint, no other Black ice hockey players were signed to the NHL until fellow Canadian Mike Marson in 1974.
