Learning Curve ✷ Wally&Guzma

“Pack yer bags kid! I ain’t got the time or patience te train ye up myself, so I’m shipping ye off ter our friends at Skull. Right.” Wally huffs moodily while he picks his way carefully around another dubiously high pile of snow. He thought Alola was suppose to be warm? His foot digs too deeply into the snow and catches. He shrieks, forced to pinwheel his arms frantically to stay standing.

“Go to Po Town!” He screams angrily while he roughly tears his foot free. “Make yerself us’ful and keep a eye on tha’ Boss a theirs for me. And then he LAUGHED!” Wally had not actually resented the orders when he first received them; he was actually relieved to finally have something to do. He’s only been with Team Aqua a few weeks, and it’s been an uneasy position at best. All this snow is an unpleasant reminder of why no one on the sparsely populated Team Aqua, let alone Archie himself, has time to work with him. The weather started acting oddly only a few days after Wally officially joined. And then people started teleporting. Needless to say, all Team Aqua resources are currently focused on investigating what the hell is going on.

Except Wally. With no experience doing the type of work Team Aqua needs him to do, and no one available to teach him, he’s been sent to Team Skull to “train”. Which basically means Archie thought it would be funny to send him into spy (of all things) on their allies as a crash course in reconnaissance, because at least if he gets caught by them he “probably won’t end up dead”. Right. He should have just joined Flare instead.

At least Wally can finally see the walls surrounding Po Town, where he’s supposedly going to find Team Skull’s Boss, Guzma. He eyes the structure, and the Team Skull members loitering around it warily as he approaches. He knew that Team Skull is colorful but this is... not what he was expecting.

“Excuse me!” he calls out to the nearest Team Skull member he sees when his way is blocked by the wall. He pulls out the note explaining who he is and why he’s here that Archie gave him before he left and waves it at the Skull member. “Greeting from your allies in Team Aqua. My name is Wally, nice to meet you. I’m expected.” If there’s sarcasm in his tone, a clip to his words, well. His patience ran out long before he even got to Ula'ula Island.

Back to Ula’Ula Island it is... She always figured she’d just end up back here in the long run. Not out of wanting but just out of pure coincidence. Alola is a small region with a population that doesn’t even exceed four-hundred. Why the hell is she living in this kind of place? It’s all just so hopeless aggravating that she constantly thinks about leaving like he did. She remembers that one voicemail particularly vividly. A part of her felt abandoned hearing that he was on his way to Sinnoh. But she left first... Without goodbyes, too.

She has no reason- no right- to be frustrated that all these former Skulls are getting on with their lives while she dwells on everything she once had. Plumeria always thought herself as someone who lives in the present.... So why is she so hung up on her little brothers and sister not needing her anymore? They’re all on their own adventures or getting their lives together while she hasn’t even bothered to text or call any of them back.

Her eyes close with a furrowed brow as she sits beneath a tree on Route 10. It‘s close enough to the road that she can easily find her way back but far enough that no one can see her. Although her Salazzle is pacing around the tree as her trainer relaxes in the shade. 

                      “If you get me spotted, Salazzle, I’m leaving you here.”

Oh, Guzma.

Sophocles knew he’d have to deal with Team Skull’s boss sooner or later- and no matter when it was he was sure he’d be saying this -but why now? The closest form of interation they’d ever had was when Sophocles occasionally pointed Hokulani’s telescope over to Po Town. Just to see what was going on.

As for the set of words Guzma decided to greet him with…well, it was pretty daring. Sophocles was young, but he was on track to become one of the top scientists in the Alola region. Guzma was nearly twice his age, and wound up as a criminal running a gang full of delinquents who kept drawing crude pictures on the roofs of Po Town’s houses. It was obvious who’d been smarter. If Sophocles wasn’t so scared of Guzma, he might have pointed that out confidently.

“Y-yeah? Are you…are you sure about that?”

Cyrus’s voice is cold and caustic tonight. He closes his eyes, leans his head back against the wall, taps ash onto the pavement outside Veilstone HQ. He’s not surprised, to see Guzma poking around Galactic property, but still wishes he could take one smoke break without being interrupted by one thing or another.

“I was more than content to let our previous relationship rest quietly. And yet... here you are. Screwing up. Dredging through just to take cheap shots at me. What, exactly, are you trying to prove?”

The Spear Pillar is the eye of the storm, metaphorically, and perhaps literally. The dark clouds that had been gathering around Mt. Coronet don’t phase him, nor does the climb. Even the prospect of what he might find at the top (that red and black portal has been swirling around in his memory, ever since this whole thing started) doesn’t deter Cyrus. It’s a pilgrimage, of sorts. He’s been to the top maybe once, twice, since emerging from that other world.

Today, the the Spear Pillar are just as quiet and empty as they’ve always been. There are no hulking, shadowy forms of legendary Pokemon among the ruins and Cyrus is a little disappointed about that, picking his way through the rubble. He has an idea of what’s been happening and why, or at least he suspects it has something to do with the creation trio.

Despite the silence, he’s still half expecting the portal to materialize above the tiles when he approaches the end. Here, where Mars and Jupiter had been standing. Here, where the red chain had dissolved in his hands. Here, where Giratina had taken him away.

Nothing happens. Cyrus sighs, breath visible in the biting cold air, rising from his mouth like smoke. He ought to have brought an offering. There are a few poffins in his bag, the kind Bella likes, but the thought of laying them out on the stone is laughable.

Instead he sinks slowly to his knees in front of the stone tile Dialga and Palkia had been summoned to all those years ago, head bowed, as if praying at an altar. The trip needn’t be in vain.

☠ = pushing them against a wall

They’re on different sides now. Cyrus has to remind himself of this, even here with his shoulder blades pressed painfully against the concrete wall of the alley. Here with his uniform ripped, chest heaving, Guzma’s hands fisted in his hair. He likes that, the push and pull, the sharp pain of it.

The push and pull of the universe at work. The kami have an odd sense of humor. It’s give and take. He’s taken Maxie to bed, so it’s only fitting another enemy is made for him, this time from an old friend. There’s a justice to that.

Deliberately, Cyrus licks blood from a split lip, raises his pale gaze to make rare eye contact with the man, pupils wavering, breath coming in short puffs. “If you’re going to do it, do it.” The order is softly spoken but with a cold, cruel intonation nonetheless. Almost a mocking.

The moment Guzma’s grip loosens on his hair, Cyrus closes his eyes, tilts his head back with a long sigh. The hands on his neck are expected, a satisfying weight against his adam’s apple when he swallows, not quite constricting, but close. There’s something in him that wants to lean into that touch.

Sam&Lucas

Munchlax is not allowed in the lab unsupervised. He will eat every piece of research he can find.

Sam must check in every hour on dates with his mafia boss boyfriend, or Lucas will assume the worst and send an email to Rowan about Sam’s tragic death. Again.

Giovanni is no longer allowed to spend the night in the house.

Or the lab.

Bunsen burners are lab equipment, and their intended use is not toasting marshmallows or reheating cold coffee.

Do not feed Princess human food. Gengar don’t need to eat, so she’ll just get fat.

Lucas and Sam’s Porygons need to be separated at night, or they’ll get bored and start making the AOL noise back and forth at each other for several hours.

Cyrus is not allowed to spend the night either.

Do not bring up the New Years Party.

Sam may drink more than he should, but the things he says after a few glasses of wine still shouldn’t be repeated back to him after he’s sobered up.

Cyrus&Guzma

Bling is to be stored in jewelry boxes, not all over Cyrus’s nightstand, or in the medicine cabinet, or all over the kitchen.

Cyrus is not to go on his morning runs unattended.

“I understand that the couch may be uncomfortable, however that does not give you permission to climb into my bed. Please let go of me.”

Cyrus has very little concept of time left after being in the Torn World, and sometimes needs to be reminded to take his medicine/eat dinner/go to bed.

Cyrus isn’t allowed to complain about Guzma’s TV choices after getting caught watching Say Yes To The Dress while Guzma wasn’t supposed to be home.

Do not touch Cyrus’s telescope.

Cyrus is incredibly grateful for the help around the house, though he’ll never say so to Guzma’s face.

Guzma needs to give Cyrus at least a day’s warning before having Plumeria or other friends over.

The same goes for Cyrus. No one, especially Guzma, wants to come home to find Giovanni sitting on their couch.

Friendship bracelets are an acceptable gift. Cyrus will act as though he doesn’t care, but probably cry over the bracelet alone later, and put it somewhere for safekeeping.

Lys&Malva

As the house has been overrun with them, Lysandre is no longer allowed to bring home stray Litleo.

Or Shinx.

Or Litten.

If Malva doesn’t tease Lysandre for naming his Luxray Augustine, Lysandre won’t comment on Malva’s Diantha posters while company is over.

Friday nights are for gossiping and painting each others’ nails.

Lysandre is an acceptable pillow and space heater on cold days, so Malva is welcome to lay on him while he complains about not being able to get any work done.

Any of Lysandre or Malva’s potential romantic partners need to go through a rigorous approval process with the other, since they both have the worst taste.

Just don’t bring up Sycamore while Lysandre is around. Just don’t.

No, Malva is not eating all the cookies Lysandre stress baked, it’s way too many for any human to consume.

Lysandre is extremely vain and needs to be told he’s pretty at least once a week.
