Bang on a can and let out some Friday feels with us in Rosemary Hills.
We’re back.
It’s our last week of the Season 1 re-listen before the premiere of Season 2!
Week 9, Episode 9: “rememberwimfaros”
Truth and consequences.
right but really i’m not over the sheer quantities of LOVE poured into the attic tape. and it’s basically all because deirdre let go of it being accurate and just let it be FUN. she stopped trying to “recreate” wim faros and let it just be what it was. here are some fun details that i love about the “studio” attic tape (and why you should all get it right away)
emma’s solo “Youth Grows Old”. she owns that bitch. even though that’s not how the song went originally, it’s how she remembers it, and they all let her take it to town while the other three give backup vocals.
there’s something really lovely about the way they all rally behind the lyrics “i’m so alone / so alone in rosemary hills” but never sing those words themselves. they’re emma’s words and they’re left for her
all of “The Weaving Song” makes me so happy! there’s a bouncy, comfy energy the whole way through, and deirdre’s so much more relaxed and confident than she was originally - when cody and rod first pieced this song together, she said it was lovely but not at all like wim, and she was clearly self-conscious about the focus on her
in this version her attitude is totally different! she’s laughing, she’s having fun, she’s making the song her own instead of just about her. and cody and emma beg for an encore so she just fucking belts it!! she sounds so proud of herself!!
the way they all congratulate each other at the end?? cody saying “i wanna sing it again”?? PURE
“I Am a Moment” is so completely unlike the other songs and it’s great. deirdre tried to recreate this song on her own first, before rod, cody, and emma were there to help, so it sounded clumsy and nothing like the enchanting effect of the song she remembered.
in the version where everyone is there to help, rod is able to whine like an aspiring pop rock kid while deirdre dramatically half-whispers and they can all go wild on the numerous instruments that she definitely imagined being there for the original performance
you can tell that “Sad But Not Depressed” is the song they have the most lyrics for because it’s so clearly from wim’s perspective, but somehow they make it their own
even though cody doesn’t whisper “this one is my favourite” at the start of this version of “Ghost Deer”, it comes through. i love that they recorded two versions of this song, one gentle and contemplative, and the other wild and rebellious. they had so much fun letting loose in the reprise!!
it just sounds like the whole reprise glues them together. for some reason i can picture them all crowding around one microphone because that’s just what it feels like it should be like
“(Some Jokes)” is so fucking adorable and it works great as an interlude. rod patiently repeating the call to his jokes for emma and deirdre helping when she gets stuck. when rod says “here’s a good one you’ll all love” because he knows these jokes are terrible and deirdre laughs. when cody says “that one was less funny i think” and deirdre laughs harder
giving cody free reign over “Magic Eye” was really cute and he clearly adores the spotlight. you can hear him widening his eyes when he sings “try hard not to blink!”. the clearly improvised part after cody yells “so many types of cheeses!!” and deirdre says “like what” and he panics aghxkjfdaf
“hhhaaaaaaa! hhaaaaaaa! the crowd goes wild!! cody-! elwood-! on the drums!! brrrrrrrrrrrah chchchchba bjbjbjbah! AAAAAAAAAAAA! WIM FAROS LIVES!! GOODNIGHT!”
i wonder if it’s deliberate that cody refers to himself as elwood rather than elwood-nowakowski??
the fact that none of them can really remember how “The Clapper” goes so they just stick with the weird riffy thing based off the commercial but make it ~edgy~ and ~intense~. the way cody says “beep (beep) beep (beep)” in two different microphones and must have ducked between the two while drumming??
the fact that deirdre said the song was a piercing critique of capitalism so cody just screams “CAPITALISM!” and giggles halfway through the second scream
i love that the cascade in “Cul-de-Sac” mirrors the one in “Youth Grows Old” and emma repeats her solo underneath the other lyrics because it creates this feeling of going round in a circle coming back to the start, just like what the song is about, and if you actually have the album on loop you do go right back to “Youth Grows Old” and start all over again and ahhhhhhhhhhhhh it’s so good
anyway buy Wim Faros: The Attic Tape
part of me really wants tim to find the wimfaroslives crew because i want to believe he'd love it but i'm scared that he'd be too embarassed by his edgy teen music to appreciate all the love deirdre and the others put into their version of the attic tape and even more scared that he would resent the changes they made (which weren’t even their FAULT)
people throw around “this slaps” but every single song on Wim Faros: The Attic Tape slaps so hard and the (Some Jokes) interlude made me giggle and you ALL should get it on bandcamp right now
you don’t need to have listened to ‘It Makes a Sound’ to appreciate the musical genius but it is a lovely show about family and memory and music. the journey to the “finished” Attic Tape is emotional and whimsical and even though the characters are trying to recreate the past initially, so much of themselves goes into the music and it’s just. beautiful.
