The simple way to solve the Splashtail question
An idea struck Tigerstar while Puddleshine and Frostpaw were challenging Splashtail. "You do all realize there's a simple way to be sure of this," he said to the Gathering as a whole.
"Sure of what, exactly?" Splashtail bared his teeth.
"That you have nine lives, of course." Tigerstar whisked his tail. "If StarClan really has given you nine lives, as you claim-"
"I do claim. I speak the truth."
Over by the medicine cats, Podlight nodded along.
"Well then," Tigerstar said, "surely the only way to satisfy us on that matter is to see what happens when you lose a life."
Nobody said anything.
Splashtail blinked, the fur on his spine rippling ever so slightly.
"Oh, come now," Tigerstar chided. "Most of us here-" He swept his tail wide in the air to include all the Clan cats gathered in the clearing - "have seen a leader lose a life, if not all of us. All of us leaders have lost lives - except Squirrelstar, of course. It's a quick, easy process. You lose a life, you share tongues with StarClan, you wake up again. Simple...if you've actually gotten them. If you have, well, you'll have shown all of us that you are right, that your claim is not to be doubted, and that StarClan agrees you are the rightful leader of RiverClan."
"And what happens," Leafstar asked slowly, "if Splashtail has not received nine lives, as your medicine cat and Frostpaw say?"
Tigerstar shrugged. Call it ShadowClan pragmatism. "Then Splashtail lied to all of us, including his own Clan. Then we are rid of a cat who sought to trick us as a pretender, and we continue searching for RiverClan's true leader."
"Because that worked out so well last time," Squirrelstar muttered.

reading wind, i hate how sunbeams chapters are so not connected to the very tense and interesting plot. i dont care about sick berryheart erins. please. go back to splashtail and frostpaw yelling about how the other ones a liar please
did you hear that whistlepaw is featured on the cover of Wind? i thought of this blog when I saw that. I don’t know if that means she'll have any POV chapters necessarily, but it's promising that she'll get to do something, I think!
yeah, I saw it. maybe whis will get a little prologue PoV or something. sadly I don't want to get my hopes up
Never mind Nightheart being Firestar's kin. Does nobody think to mention that he's Squirrelstar's kin? Nobody thinks "Hey, maybe Squirrelstar is being biased towards her grandson" - and Finchlight was made a mentor as well - instead of "I bet he only gets the honor because he's descended from this famous cat who's been dead longer than either of us have been alive." And isn't Honeyfur also related to Firestar?
The thing is, no one exists in a vacuum. What set Splashtail down this path? It can't have been only and entirely Curlfeather.
Did Splashtail's parents ever make condescending remarks about StarClan or Mistystar?
Did Splashtail ever occasionally tentatively probe his sister Fognose to see if she felt the same way about StarClan that he did?
