Prompt 4- Self-Editing

Wind whipped her head around, looking across to her companion. A squint of suspicion narrowed her eyes as she tried to judge what the intent of that question was. “Self-editing? Exactly what do you mean?” 

Both ears twitched, just slightly as she listened to the question. After the other person stopped speaking, it took a good few minutes before the suspicious look on her face passed. Finally, the woman nodded. “Ah. I see. In that case, yeah. I’ve done that and I’m not sure you’ll find a single person on this star who hasn’t. It’s kind of the nature of being alive, I’d think.” 

A long pull from the tankard followed as she folded both arms across the table, amber eyes stared hard at the other body sharing her table. “You can’t tell me you’ve ever not embellished a thing? Made some tale you were speaking of sound better with added details not in the original version?  Added some bit here or there to make yourself sound better?” Wind chuckled as the person stumbled over their words. 

“Oh surely, we’re all guilty of it. I’ve told enough stories of my own.”  At the look from across the table, Wind laughed softly, a barely heard sound in the tavern. 

“It’s the old fisher man story. You know the one, where they catch a fish this big but over the years and many re-tellings that fish magically grows by leaps and bounds into something even Leviathan would fear!”  Still chuckling as she explained the trope involved. Only she blinked at the next question, as unexpected as it was. 

“Me? One I’ve told?” 

Silent for a long moment, as Wind pondered this. Sipping at her glass as she sorted though her thoughts before speaking. “My life and stories aren’t normally the type which get embellished, it’s more a case of often leaving things out because others don’t want to be that closely associated with them.”  One hand raised, she waved down the waitress who brought over two fresh tankards of cider before Wind would continue. 

“I tell people my family is dead, and they are. Normally it’s simple but yes, that is the edited version of it. You see..”   pausing as she plucked up the newly arrived tankard. Eyes hard and level across the top of the tankard, focused on her companion “..people don’t want to hear that you watched your parents, aunts, uncles and grandmother be slaughtered as a child. They don’t want those details. No one wants to hear how well you remember the color their blood stained the sand and scrub. Nor how you have those last moments etched into your memory for the rest of your days. How it visits you on warm summer nights when the crickets sing and the sea-breezes blows just the right way, with distant thunder on the horizon.” 

Wind stared across, face completely blank and expressionless. “That is why you edit yourself, edit your stories and your tales. No one wants that much of reality re-told to them.” With that, the miqo’te woman raised her tanked and smoothly downed the entire contented, washing away the words from her tongue. Once it was finished she set it back down and waved again for a refill. The animated and somber moment passed, the smirk returned to her face after a wave of alcoholic apple-juice.

“Now then, that’s something you know.”
