Hopper knows what it’s like to be lonely.
He’ll be the first to admit he’s brought it upon himself, closed himself off from having people to turn to.
He tells himself he likes it that way, though; he only has to look out for himself and he isn’t an inconvenience to anyone.
He does have a penchant for noticing people on their own, though, sometimes wondering if they’re just like him, caging themselves in.
He notices you around town, sees you on your own at the diner, sees you shopping alone. Flo knows everyone but even she takes a few moments in recollecting your name.
One day, Hopper finds himself approaching the table you’re sat at in the diner.
He’ll smile as he holds his hat in one hand, a cup of coffee in the other, and offer a polite hello, catching your attention.
You’ll be slightly taken aback, lowering your book and looking almost nervous for a moment. “Am I about to be arrested, Chief?”
“No, no, I just thought… May I sit here?”
You’ll blink, then give him the biggest smile. “Sure, feel free.”
After you both introduce yourselves, he’ll ask how you are, and you’ll ask the same after answering.
Then, suddenly, you’ll have a hundred questions.
You’ll ask about the town, about his job, about what’s interesting to do on a day off in the area, what’s he’s watching on TV that you might be interested in.
It’ll almost break his heart, knowing you’ve probably been desperate to have conversations like this with someone, because he’ll have felt the same way.
What surprises him, though, is how easy conversation is with you.
After some time, you’ll smile sheepishly and apologise for taking up so much of his time. He’ll dismiss your apology gently and before he can stop himself, he’ll say, “Same time tomorrow?”
Your smile will be even wider than your previous one.
After that, it’ll become a habit, both of you looking forward to it.
He’ll invite you to drinks with his officers, introducing you to them and feeling a strange, nice sensation in his chest when you get on with them, gladly responding you’ll love to come back again.
He’ll look up things to do around Hawkins that could interest you and he’ll call every few days for a chat.
You’ll even arrange movie nights, hosting them at your house, he’ll bring the food and drink.
You’ll both look forward to your meetings, waiting for the phone or the doorbell to ring. Soon, you’ll start to get butterflies in your stomach when you see him, your smile lingering far longer than it should.
And soon, he’ll find that, maybe after all this time, you’ve been helping him more than he has you.
