does anyone know what to do if the touch pad and keyboard stop working? I updated my laptop and the only way to do anything is when I have my tablet plugged in. It won't show the mouse icon on the screen if it's not plugged in either. Kind of freaked out and Google isn't really helping. Anyone know what to do/ have suggestions?

How to Perform Windows 8.1 Install With a Windows 8 Key
Microsoft has behaved very diplomatically in the recent past especially after the launch of it next gen operating system Windows 8. On the one hand it has introduced Windows 8.1 as a free update to all Windows 8 users, and on the other hand it doesn’t facilitate Windows 8.1 installation via the Windows product 8 key. In simple words, it means that a Windows product 8 key will not fit to the Windows 8.1 installer, just the way a Windows 7 key doesn’t fit to the Windows 8 installer. But problem lies in the fact that Windows 8.1 is not a new or regular update, it is a free update available to all Windows 8 users, and we all know that Microsoft introduced the 8.1 update because Windows 8 received lot of criticism in the market and had many loopholes. The 8.1 version is basically designed to fix the loopholes of version 8. Hence, 8 and 8.1 are in a way the same update, so there is not much sense of introducing a new key.
At the bottom-line, if you have already purchased and installed Windows 8, then to upgrade to 8.1 you have to use the Windows 8.1 upgrade offer in the Windows Store and update your version. But you can’t install Windows 8.1 afresh, for the simple reason that the Windows 8.1 installer will not accept the Windows 8 key. This means only those who have purchased the 8.1 version can install it for fresh.
However, all said till now is just the theory, whereas practically you can freshly install Windows 8.1 even with the aid of the version 8 product key. There is a trick for this, read below to learn it:
Download Windows 8.1 in a Computer Using Version 8 Product Key
When you try to install the fresh 8.1 version in a computer, the installer will ask for the product key. If you haven’t purchased the 8.1 version then you can’t have the key. Entering the product key for version 8 will not get accepted by the 8.1 installer. But the 8.1 OS will accept the version 8 product key if you enter it from desktop after completing the installation of 8.1. Hence, if somehow you can skip the product key prompt during the installation process, then you can enter the version 8 product key later from the desktop.
Now, the trick to skip the product key prompt during installation process lies within KMS Client Setup Keys of Microsoft’s website. Click on the Windows 8.1 installer and launch it. When you will be prompted for the product key enter the KMS Client Setup Keys from Microsoft’s website. The installer will accept it and version 8.1 will get installed normally. Later from the desktop you can change your key to your original Windows 8 key.
Download Windows 8.1 in a Bootable USB Using Version 8 Product Key
However, if you want to create an installation media, means if you want to install the fresh 8.1 in a bootable USB so that you can use it on multiple computers, then you can try out the following steps to trick the installer:
Run the Windows 8 Setup program
Next, choose ‘Run’
Now, you will be prompted to enter the product key. Enter the key that you received while purchasing the Windows 8.
Now, run the Windows 8.1 Setup program
Next choose ‘Run’ the ‘WindowsSetupBox.exe file.’ This time windows will not ask for the product key and the downloading will start.
Once the downloading gets completed, you will be provided with the following choices:
Select the second option ‘Install by creating media’
Next, you have to choose which media you want to use. Here you will be provided with two options: create a bootable USB Flash Drive or create an ISO file, as shown below:
In this scenario, insert a 4 to 8GB USB stick to your computer's USB port. Then select the first option’ USB Flash Drive.’ This will direct the install to the newly ported USB stick.
Now, open the USB drive in File Explorer or Windows Explorer
Then navigate to the source folder inside it
Now right-click in any free space inside the folder, select New > Text Document. Name the newly created text document as ei.cfg.
Enter the following content in the new created text document:
Now, the 8.1 version will get normally installed in the USB. Now the installer will prompt for the product key, here you can enter the version 8 products key and version 8.1 installer will accept it for reasons not known. Now, you can insert the USB (newly created installation media) to multiple computers where you wish to install the 8.1 version and can simply get it installed using the Windows 8 product key.

Windows 8: An Extension to Windows 7 Fundamental Features
Windows 8 is loaded with a set of cult features that would surely drive the future of operating systems besides raising a bar for them. The urban-style OS has been built on the fundamental features of Windows 7, its to-be predecessor to offer an enhanced yet familiar user experience.
Besides being an improved version of Windows 7, what differentiates Windows 8 from the former is its unique concept and approach for computing that is a mix of conventional keyboard input and contemporary touch style. The mix and match style, which did not exist in the previous version has been designed to support multiple devices.
Compared to Windows 7, the upcoming OS offers enhanced system performance, improved reliability, refurbished kernel system, greater flexibility and security, and faster startups among other things. So let's take a dive into the world of Windows 8 features that are more or less an extension of Windows 7's or previous versions' features. Yet the features are unique in their own way and would offer a matchless experience.
User Interface (UI)- the all-in-one urban-style user interface offers you a quick glance through your world. Weather, emails, music, photos, instant messaging, RSS feeds, Control Panel, Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, backups, and what not more, everything is cascaded on the user interface to give you a one-touch access to every little thing you need. What's more, you can customize the Start screen to add your favorite shortcuts and things like websites, photo albums, music tracks, and computer settings among other things. Thus you need not browse to different sections of your Windows to reach a particular application or program, simply pin it to your user interface and get going. Convenience and flexibility are the only things that Windows 8 offers for its users.
Windows Update- Microsoft has retained the old built-in feature in Windows 8 but in an improved manner. Now Windows Update will simply not interrupt you in the midst of playing a game, making an important presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint, or doing anything which is very important to you in that time. In other words, it will simply not push you to install the Windows updates first, reboot your computer, and start working afterwards.
Since Windows 8 knows that it is equally important to keep the computer up-to-date, it exploits the time when the system is idle and is not being used for any productive work. The operating system gives you an option to customize the Windows Update feature for scheduling updates and rebooting computer. Besides, you can choose a convenient time for rebooting your computer after an update has been installed. Consequently, you will not see those annoying prompts that would appear every now and then prompting you to install the updates.
Windows Task Manager- Here is your old feature but in new style. The new colored tile style lets you know which process or application is consuming CPU resources the most. The all-in-one Task Manager console offers more control and monitoring for your computer. Besides, you can see the comprehensive details, history, and summery graphs for all the applications and processes running on your computer. So if you find a process consuming much resource, you would know what to do with it.
Similar Hardware Requirements- Yes, Windows 8 does not require you to install additional hardware or software. It works on the same infrastructure on which Windows 7 and Vista works. As a result, it gives you relief from upgrading your existing hardware with a great deal of money. Though the touch input requires a multi-touch
Virtual Keyboard- This is something very unique and an outstanding feature in Windows 8. The OS comprises two touch-screen keyboards; with one is a thumb-size while other is a full-size keyboard consisting of large key buttons for enhanced convenience and flexibility. The virtual keyboard supports multiple languages for convenience and adjusts its layout automatically to touch-based PCs. Besides, it gives you word suggestions when you type a word, making your work easier and faster. What's more, it automatically corrects your spelling mistakes and even gives you spelling suggestions to minimize the chances of typing mistakes.
