Detail of the dog-shaped handle and lid decorations on this Early Celtic (La Tène 500 BC-100 AD) bronze flagon. The lid and base are inlaid with coral. This was made in France copying Estruscan styles. Flagons like this were used for pouring wine, beer or mead at feasts. I love the lively style of the dogs, and that they chose to use dogs at all for such a spectacular and important serving vessel. You can see the fine detailing of the dogs' hair, and the fierce expressions on their faces. Although there's a chance these could be wolves, I think it makes more sense that they are dogs. Feasting may have followed a successful hunt, which had been aided by dogs. (At the British Museum)
