it’s so dark and beautiful. that’s all she can think about. the stars are nearly hypnotizing, leading her on a scarcely moonlight path, feet crunching in the leaves even as she keeps her step light. her walk had taken on an air of wandering, the farther she went into the coarse forest. soon, she must have been in a dream. the whole landscape was cloaked in a mysterious haze, her eyes straining to see the trees using the little flecks of light. fireflies. their twinkling makes her giggle. tonight, she’s grateful for breaks in the roof of the forest to allow the silvery light in. if she hadn’t been able to see, she never would’ve notice the odd, still nature of this venture. the animals poised around expectantly, curious. it was a very strange dream, then. usually her imagination offered her something. allie ran her fingers up both of her arms, sweeping what she imagined to be a cool air away, giving her a warmth that her sleeveless nightgown could not. but she wasn’t worried about that. the sensation of cold was so far away, so far that it didn’t matter. what did matter was the curious gap between what should be happening and what isn’t. allie embraces the mystery, shrugging off her worries with a roll of her shoulders, she drops to the ground, resting on her knees, combs her fingers through crumpled leaves. maybe she could find rest here, in her dreams.
