Pesky ghost hummingbirds.
Oh, wait...they came back to life...
In the afternoon I checked my feeding places again: Bingo! Everyone was accepted, in two places I was able to photograph a buzzard each, the other places were more difficult to see and I didn't want to disturb the birds. Nice success. In total I counted 4 buzzards, 2 red kites, 4 ravens, several crows and 2 magpies at and around the feeding stations. The fox will probably fetch the leftovers tonight.
Yesterday bought the cheapest soup chickens in the supermarket to feed “my” birds of prey. With all the snow and the closed snow cover, they won't find any more mice. In such a situation, many birds of prey starve to death if they cannot find substitute food (carrion). Of course I can't feed all of them, but I know pretty well where they can be found in my area and can specifically help a few of them.
PERKELE ❗
Apple of my Eye Serendipity strikes when you least expect it. Saw this little drama just walking down the street. Here we have a critter taking advantage of free food!! Mr Squirrel decided this was succulent snaking... hence The Apple of His Eye.
Place a bag of sugar on the top brood box, slice it open with a knife, surround it with an empty super, and cover it with a moisture quilt and lid.
Usually you think, that the redpolls are found in tansy fields, where they are looking for seeds. Though this January has been mild and practically snowless, the redpolls came to the garden feeding place. There has been plenty of them, sometimes even more than 20.
In the Helsinki area the temperature has been below zero now for two weeks. Until today there has been no snow. The cold weather and frozen ground brought a lot of bullfinches to the feeding place in the garden. This does not happen every winter.
