Canning & bottling supply shortages?
This is getting crazy! I have tried every major outlet and every small grocer to try to source caps, flats or rings for canning/bottling jars -- nothing! I haven’t been able to get complete jar kits since June. Caps since early July.
Now I am trying to source online and am able find some jars but not kits nor caps. This is really getting insane! It is akin to shortages in chicken supplies : feeders, water fonts, chicken antibiotics and sometimes the feed supplies which is why I am trying to lay in some stock for them if winter comes and the supply is cut off. Worse case for them is that they would have to be let out to forage, eat table/garden scraps (which they do now) and since I bought a 22 kilo bulk bag (they didn’t have smaller) of rice, they could get cooked rice occasionally.
So ... do I look for paraffin? I remember watching as a child some of the elders still using wax to seal the jams. But I don’t do much jam. I don’t think you try putting up other goods in wax except maybe seal cheese because you can’t use this in pressure cooked/hot water bath methods which are necessary food safety (you need the sealing caps). Thankfully, I dry so much so can reuse the caps repeatedly (or until they rust in the maritime air). I don’t think I can afford the fancier German jars ...
